I have been teaching for 23 years. For more than half of that, I have worked with students and teachers to integrate technology into traditional lessons.
In the classes I currently teach at the middle school level, I focus on developing students' skills on a cross-platform level, so that they can collaborate on projects not just using Windows or Mac applications, but also using online collaborative tools. We also spend a great deal of time discussing the careful crafting of an online presence as an adolescent, considering ethical issues and little-known facts about cybersafety.
My focus as an author and presenter of professional development is squared firmly on ISTE's NETS-T rubrics. I work with middle school teachers by grade levels and departments to integrate tools that connect classrooms globally, bring experts into the classroom via Skype, and provide students a broader authentic audience for their work.
I strive for a school environment in which students can move fluently from one platform or tool to another, selecting easily which application or web resource will provide the greatest return for the task at hand. I look forward to the near future, when teachers embrace the many technologies for what they are -- mere vehicles that allow students to access knowledge, build connections, and demonstrate their learning.
