Karen Kefauver spent a night high in the Andes Mountains with a Peruvian family that spoke Quechua. Seven guinea pigs ran around the dirt-floored kitchen as she sipped mushroom soup and huddled next to the fire for warmth on a freezing October night. She didn't mind the smell of burning alpaca guano. Her hosts offered her the best seat - a tiny, wooden stool covered with alpaca skin...She returned to the town of Ollantaytambo (near Cusco) 48 hours later with a different outlook on life.
