This role developed my skills of leadership, negotiation and communication. I believe in leading by example, always behaving in a professional manner and setting high standards for yourself that others can model. I had to be able to motivate my staff and pupils, through target setting, coaching, and providing opportunities for success. I also made extensive use of Microsoft packages such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Responsibilities and Achievements included:
· Leading the Modern Languages Department, comprising 8 teaching staff and 3 Foreign Language Assistants, offering French & German
· Teaching a full timetable of French and German classes, ranging from S1-6 and all associated duties
· Using KPIs to establish departmental aims and priorities through the construction of a Development Plan, monitoring and evaluating progress within this plan, delegating work tasks according to strengths & development needs of department members
· Managing the development and welfare of teaching staff, and in particular, supporting their continuing professional development
· Analysing and evaluating the department’s results, producing an annual report, discussing trends with the Head-teacher and line manager and agreeing targets for future performance
· Planned and managed the implementation of the New Qualifications structure, a complete change to the National Qualifications structure in Scotland, leading department based training and devising all aspects of managing this change
· Attending to the administration arrangements in relation to national examinations
· Managing and assigning teaching timetables on an annual basis
· Initiated a Work Experience Placement in Germany for our Higher pupils, now in its 6th year and extended across East Lothian secondary schools
· I led the department through two successful Inspections from HMIe, where I was praised for my organisational skills

I took on the role of Acting Depute Head-teacher between Jan. 2005 and Sept. 2006, to cover the secondment of colleagues. This role was fast paced and highly visible. I had to display high standards of professionalism and knowledge to support pupils, families, colleagues and the rest of the Senior Management Team. My high level of attention to detail enhanced senior staff meetings and my regard for the welfare of staff led me to pursue HR.
Responsibilities and Achievements included:
· Management responsibility for a range of subject departments
· Responsibility for new pupil admissions, transition arrangements, such as parental enquiries, communicating with other schools, record transfers
· Organisational responsibility for all aspects of parents’ evenings, including consultation with parents, staff, School Board
· Overview of all excursions and exchanges, risk assessments, also leading numerous foreign exchange trips, jointly leading a trip to Belgium for circa 130 pupils
· Staff Development co-ordinator for a staff of circa 65, as well as undertaking annual review meetings with a range of staff
· School Calendar – responsible for compiling a calendar of all school events, e.g. reporting deadlines, prelims, & negotiating staff and union agreement for this
· Redrafting a policy for department performance management and running a pilot session of this, negotiating staff and union support for this change
· Instrumental in introducing Mandarin and mentoring Chinese teachers
· Assisted in the mentoring of probationer teachers and completion of observations
· Assisted in the recruitment and selection of teaching staff, devising interview questions, selecting candidates and sitting on interview panel
