Joshua Jacobsen’s Summary

My professional experience encompasses all aspects of installing, configuring, designing, programming, and authoring a web site. I have certifications (MCSE, MCSA) in running Windows-based servers, although I also have experience installing and configuring Unix-based servers. I have extensive experience installing the Microsoft IIS web server, Apache, and Netscape Enterprise Server. I have a certification (MCDBA) for installing, configuring, and administering Microsoft SQL Server. I also have experience with MySQL. I am adept with HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I am skilled with Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightwave 3D for graphical design work. I have extensive experience programming with ASP classic (VB Script), ASP.Net (both C# and VB), Perl, and PHP. I have experience (a little stale at this point) with Cold Fusion and Java.

While I enjoy a variety of technical roles in an organization, my goal is to continue with my web development experience. Alternately, I would be interested in a DBA role supporting and administering database servers.

  • Programmer Analyst III (Web Developer)

    Occidental Petroleum Corporation

(Public Company; oxy; Oil & Energy industry)

    January 1999February 2009 (10 years 2 months)

Occidental Petroleum Corporation is a large multinational company. I started work in the chemicals division publishing important information related to our chemical products on a public website. I was also responsible for creating an extensive intranet that spanned all departments throughout the company -- this was a combination of content publishing work, some mentoring of other content developers, and some architectural and programming work. The company transitioned many of its data systems to the web (from shared excel spreadsheets, lotus notes, and desktop applications) and I was responsible for nearly all of this web application development. I was eventually consolidated into an "enterprise organization" where I continued to be the senior technical specialist for web technologies. My work included ASP development, SQL Server 2000 administration, ASP.NET (both VB.Net and C#.Net) development, Administration and development with WSS 2.0 and 3.0 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003. I also implemented MOSS 2007 as part of a team, my work centering on master page development and content query web part development.

  • Webmaster

    Alcatel

    (Information Technology and Services industry)

    May 1997October 1998 (1 year 6 months)

Alcatel Network Systems is a telecommunications company that manufactures high-speed data and voice communications devices primarily used by telecommunications and internetworking providers. While at Alcatel, I worked in a technical marketing group creating web pages and graphics for the technical marketing team. I was later promoted to a position within the web design team, creating web pages and graphics for the corporate internet website. I was later promoted into the IT team responsible for programming websites (using Tango, Perl, and Web Objects). This team was also responsible for server maintenance (Solaris) and web server administration (Netscape Enterprise Server). I was formally trained to do both these duties and performed them on a regular basis as required.

  • Engineering Tools Developer

    Wiltel / LDDS / Worldcom / MCI

    (Telecommunications industry)

    April 1994August 1996 (2 years 5 months)

Wiltel was a telecommunications company that provided long-distance service. Wiltel and LDDS went through several acquisitions and mergers while I was there, changing names frequently. At Wiltel, I worked in the engineering department writing custom database applications used to track various engineering concerns. Among these were the budgeting process, project tracking, equipment tracking, available power at equipment sites, and bandwidth capacity along telecommunications routes. I primarily used Dataflex, Visual Dataflex, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Visual Basic 2.0 to create these tools. I also created a web server using apache on linux to provide an intranet site with access to our data. Later, I took a position doing database queries for the network planning division. This was performed via JCL on an AS400 mainframe, and provided summary data regarding telecommunications traffic that was needed to plan expansion of the network.
