When I enrolled in the journalism master's program at Michigan State University, I primarily was interested in traditional print journalism, but a digital public affairs reporting class sparked my interest in multimedia storytelling. Further investigation and experience only served to enforce my belief in the medium as a powerful tool for encouraging participatory democracy.
While a student, I helped create and reported for spartysecrets.com, an exercise in participatory journalism. The goal of the site was to actively engage the university's student body in asking, uncovering and communicating questions about campus life. Each week, myself and two other students reported on a student-submitted question, using print, video, photography, slideshows and other media to provide a comprehensive answer to each query.
In the summer of 2007 I interned at The Truth, a smallish daily newspaper serving Elkhart, Ind. I spent the summer primarily as an online-video reporter, filming, editing and writing packages. I also collaborated with tech staff on a google-map based voting guide that pulled data from an xml file to instruct potential voters where to find their precinct polling location.
Currently, I work as a night news and sports producer at MLive.com, the largest news Web site in the state of Michigan. My immediate responsibilities include updating the site's various home pages with headlines, teasers and links. Eventually, I hope to use my flash, google map and database skills to develop web specific product for the sites, which pulls primarily print-based content from eight Michigan dailies.
