John M. Morris’s Summary
John Morris is a Managing Director of GKM Ventures, a venture capital firm managing a portfolio of information technology companies. As an experienced angel investor, John is active is helping entrepreneurs with their efforts to build successful businesses. John is a frequent speaker on venture capital and angel investing.
Since 2005, John has been a member of the UCLA Anderson School of Business for their FEMBA GAP program where he advises student teams helping international companies with significant strategic decisions, often involving product launches in new geographic markets.
John is also the Chairman Emeritus of the Tech Coast Angels, the largest angel organization in the country. TCA members mentor, coach and invest in startups and early-stage companies based on So. California.
John has previous investment banking and venture capital experience with several regional firms, including Sutro & Co., Wedbush Morgan Securities and NewCap Partners. John started his venture capital career as a partner with First Interstate VC, a wholly owned subsidiary of First Interstate Bancorp.
His ten years of operating and financial management experience was as VP Finance and CFO with Phone Mate, Inc., and with Wynn's International, Inc.
John began his business career on the audit staff with Arthur Young & Co. (now Ernst & Young) in Los Angeles after receiving his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He received a BA in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles.
John has been a director in a number of private and public companies. John is currently serves on the board of directors for a GKM portfolio company, Syntricity, Inc. in San Diego, VC backed Accordent, Inc. in El Segundo, and a TCA company, BenchMark Revenue, Inc. in San Diego. John has been a former board member of Entretech, LAVA and the Forum for Corporate Directors (FCD).
