Experiential learning games have been piloted as a method to communicate climate science both within the humanitarian sector and among climate risk management practitioners. Games designed to build collective intelligence and enhance the uptake of climate science, have already been tested in various stakeholder-driven consultative processes around issues of climate compatible development. The American Red Cross is working with game designers and practitioners to explore the potential of games to impart understanding of complex concepts in climate change, and under the USAID funded Vietnam Forest and Deltas Programme the ARC is testing some selected games with different target audiences, building local facilitation capacity, contextualizing some existing and developing some new games appropriate for differing audiences and localities.

We are assisting the Tanzanian government with a participatory learning game, initially designed to demonstrate the effectiveness over time of TASAF, a new productive safety net program. TASAF then asked us to adapt the game to use as the extension tool for roll-out and to train a cadre of national trainers who can train facilitators in each district to use the game with eligible farming households, so they can see how participating in TASAF can help them to more readily adapt to increasing extremes and frequency of drought. The TASAF game won a World Bank award for innovation.

Participatory Game for a New Climate: Metro Boston is a participatory climate change/art project initiated by Artists in Context (AIC), in collaboration with Janot Mendler de Suarez, visiting research fellow and co-convener of the Games for a New Climate Task Force at Boston University's Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future. AIC is a Cambridge-based organization with a flexible format designed to bring together artists and creative thinkers across disciplines to spur new ways of representing and acting upon the critical issues of our time.
The project aims to explore the potential of art-based experiential learning games for inspiring interest and engagement, framing collaborative dialogue, and accelerating pro-active public participation in discourse and activities related to our changing climate. The emphasis will be on the consequences of the intensification of the hydrological cycle and opportunities opened through alternative systems-thinking for imagining and constructing our shared future.
