Geoffrey Oxberry's Experience

Postdoctoral Researcher, Engineering

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Government Agency; 5001-10,000 employees; Research industry

November 2012Present (1 year 11 months) Livermore, CA

Developed adaptive proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) methods that yield reduced order models with 10x fewer equations than conventional POD methods. Currently working on finite element models and PDE-constrained optimization for battery applications.

Volunteer Pro Tempore Moderator, Computational Science Stack Exchange

Stack Exchange

Privately Held; 51-200 employees; Internet industry

December 2011Present (2 years 10 months)

Moderator and curator of Computational Science Stack Exchange ( Helped grow community from a few hundred users to over 2,300 users (and counting, as of 12/16/2012). Voted on questions, answered and asked questions. Edited both questions and answers. Resolved disputes between users. Encouraged users to edit questions and answers for clarity and usefulness.

Educational Institution; 5001-10,000 employees; Higher Education industry

August 2006September 2012 (6 years 2 months) Cambridge, MA

Thesis: Global Error Bounds on Model Reduction in Combustion

Developed theory to unify many model reduction methods used both within and outside of combustion into a single formalism. Used that formalism to prove global error bounds on solutions of reduced order models. Also published paper using mixed-integer programming and operations research methods to create an algorithm for model reduction in combustion. Implementation in Python can be found on

CSGF Practicum Intern

Sandia National Laboratories

Government Agency; 5001-10,000 employees; Defense & Space industry

June 2008August 2008 (3 months)

Worked as a research assistant under Dr. Bert Debusschere and Dr. Habib Najm on combustion modeling using polynomial chaos expansions.

Intern in Process Dynamics and Control Group

Public Company; 10,001+ employees; DD; Chemicals industry

June 2006August 2006 (3 months)

Worked under Dr. Bob Cox to fit equation of state parameters to polymer-solvent systems. Also developed an algorithm to determine one of pressure, density, or temperature, given data for the other two state variables.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

University of Delaware

Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Higher Education industry

June 2003August 2006 (3 years 3 months)

Created data compression and processing routines using FORTRAN90, FFTW libraries, LAPACK libraries, and simple Perl scripts. Characterized coherent structures in both Newtonian and non-Newtonian turbulent flows by analyzing direct numerical simulation data from a computational fluid dynamics code.
