CEO and Founder
In 2007, Ralph Heredia and I founded Zipit Wireless. At our core, we’re a cloud-based software and services provider with key intellectual property and expertise in connecting wireless devices to Internet based services. Zipit has two primary divisions - Critical Communications and M2M (Machine to Machine) Services.
Our Critical Communications Division, most simply stated, helps companies replace their existing pagers. We’re focused on truly changing the world of priority messaging and secure communications. Our customers include Hospitals, Ambulance Service Providers, Hotels, Manufacturers, Utilities, Government Agencies, and customers in several other industries. Our solution helps companies eliminate the frustrations and headaches they experience with their out of date one-way communication systems and we help eliminate their legal and financial risks associated with communicating over systems that aren't secure.
It is exciting and rewarding to deliver a solution that dramatically improves the communications processes for companies that focus on saving lives, providing better healthcare, keeping their manufacturing lines operational, or simply providing a better experience for their customers.
Our M2M Division provides Internet-based services and wireless connectivity for a variety of devices. Zipit’s offering includes a robust cloud-based infrastructure, connectivity and activations for wireless service providers, web-based interfaces and smartphone applications for device management and communication, customer support portals, and in-depth reporting services. Our services help end users manage their mobile devices, enterprises manage mobile workers and equipment, and carriers extend their networks to a variety of mobile devices that generate recurring revenue.
With a broad background in the wireless communications and computing industries and a passion for starting and building companies, I've been a part of multiple entrepreneurial businesses since 1995 - leading to my role as the CEO of an industry leading wireless communications provider, Zipit Wireless.
We offer our own unique 2-way communication devices, smartphone applications, and a cloud-based dispatch and management console that together provides the industry’s most comprehensive critical communications solution. In addition, we partnered with Verizon Wireless to offer unmatched network coverage and reliability for our devices and to utilize their extensive nationwide enterprise sales force.
I led a team of engineers and business development resources that added a commercial design services business to Aeronix, a company with a very strong government design services business. I continued to gain valuable business development experience working with large consumer electronics companies. More importantly, I learned from the founders of Aeronix how to create an environment for employees that breeds loyalty and commitment. We worked hard, played hard, and it was OK to have lives with our families. Truly a great experience in all respects. Aeronix's founders also supported me when I decided that I wanted to start and build my own company.
I gained fantastic experience in managing the process of being acquired and integrating a team of engineers into a larger company. I also gained valuable experience in business development and sales. We were able to sell our technology and incorporate it in products for industry leaders such as Sony, Compaq, Kenwood, and Thomson RCA.
avActive was my first exposure to starting a company and provided firsthand experience with all of the startup activities required to get a company going, including business plans, fund raising, and corporate formation. avActive was a pioneer in developing media management software, hardware, and services for incorporation in OEM products. We sold the company to Escient (later OpenGlobe), a private company based in Indianapolis, 6 months after we founded it.
Cirrus Logic was my first taste of being part of a high tech startup environment. Despite Cirrus Logic already being a billion dollar company by the time I joined, I was given the opportunity to start and run a new division that was able to operate much like a startup organization. After being part of large corporate environments at AT&T and NCR, Cirrus Logic provided my first taste of being able to make my own decisions and make things happen quickly. I liked it! We assembled a world class team of hardware and software designers that was second to none and provided design services for a wide variety of large computer companies that were experiencing the transition from internal design resources to outsourced designs. Cirrus Logic was a great company to work for and allowed me to spin-out a true startup in 1999.
My time with AT&T was brief but intense. AT&T acquired NCR in what was at the time the largest acquisition in history. Our PC Division remained intact and added talented resources from AT&T's former PC Division. I remained as the Director of Engineering and gained incredibly valuable experience working with Asian manufacturers that were beginning to dominate designing and manufacturing computers.
My first 10 years after Clemson were spent at NCR - putting my Computer Engineering degree to good use initially developing computer chips for the emerging Personal Computer business. During my 10 years with NCR, we grew the Personal Computer Division to the 4th largest PC provider in the world and participated in the growth of a major industry that included PCs, laptops, pen-based computers, and multi-processor servers. My roles included chip design, electronics design, system design, project management, management, and a final role as the Director of Engineering.
I received my MBA from Clemson University by completing the great program that has been offered for years in Greenville - first at the "Clemson at Furman" program and then more recently at the University Center and now on Main Street in the heart of downtown. It took me 7 years to complete the program taking classes after work and managing a growing family. Well worth the investment of time!
