In 1987 he became the eighth American and youngest ever at the time to pass the prestigious Master Sommelier examination.
He has served two terms as chairman of the American Chapter of the Court of Master Sommeliers, served as an advisor to the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation, acted on the Board of Directors of Women Chefs’ and Restaurateurs, and received finalist nominations four times for the James Beard “Outstanding Wine & Spirits Professional” award in 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2005. Evan was presented with the Starwine® first-ever ‘Achievement in Education’ award in 2005 and the ‘Wine Marketer of the Year” in 2006. Also in 2006, Evan was named “Wine Professional of the Year” by Sunset magazine.
He is the author of Five Star Service: Your Guide to Hospitality Excellence and the critically acclaimed book, Perfect Pairings: A Master Sommelier’s Practical Advice for Partnering Wine with Food. In addition, Goldstein co-authored Wine and Food Pairing in the Williams Sonoma Lifestyles series as well as the wine sections for three of Joyce Goldstein's acclaimed cookbooks: The Mediterranean Kitchen, Back to Square One, and Kitchen Conversations. His next book, working title'd Daring Pairings (also with the University of California Press) is expected to be released in Spring 2010.
He is a regular editorial contributor to America’s Santé magazine, a contributing editor for Wine & Dine (Singapore’s celebrated epicurean publication) and is the American wine correspondent for Wine Review, South Korea’s leading wine and food magazine, and is a recurring guest wine expert on NBC’s syndicated television show “In Wine Country.” Evan also makes regular guest appearances on the top-rated “Ronn Owens’ Show” on KGO Radio and on Saturday morning’s KPIX/UPN “Eyewitness News” – both in San Francisco.
