Elizabeth M. Taylor’s Summary

Like most professionals in Localization, I've worn many hats: In-House Translator, Account Manager/Business Development Manager, Project Manager, Vendor Manager, etc.

As a translator, some of my favorite projects included pro-bono work for Doctors Without Borders and Alain Ducasse's Spoon Cook Book.

As an Account Manager on the service-provider side of Localization, I loved bringing in clients who were brand new to localization and showing them that it's not so scary after all. I enjoyed working for mid-sized companies who were flexible enough to make quick decisions, but were large enough to handle more complex projects. The most important thing to remember in this industry is that it all comes down to customer service and adding value for your clients.

Now that I am working on the client side, I'm enjoying focusing on more strategic, long-term planning and understanding the main drivers for global business decisions. Launching a localization program from the ground up is definitely challenging, but defining processes and putting in place best-practices have always been my key strengths, so it's also very rewarding.

I'm very curious to see what the future holds for localization - there are some exciting tools coming out, and it will be interesting to see how that shapes what we do from day-to-day.

See the Nov/Dec 2007 issue of the ATA Chronicle for my article "Profezional Linguist Seekign Work: Tips to Building a Successful Localization Resume"

...or look for the synopsis of the 2007 ATA Conference in San Francisco, where I presented "Breaking into the Industry: How to Gain Experience When Employers Will Not Give You Experience Without Previous Experience." It was a great forum and was recommended by 100% of the surveyed attendees!
