Co-founder

New Seasons Market

Privately Held; 1001-5000 employees; Food & Beverages industry

19992009 (10 years) Portland, Oregon Area

Founded in 1999 by three families and many loyal friends, this 12 store grocery chain leads the nation in innovative local buying programs, progressive workplace practices and community-based infrastructure. Eileen provided a portion of the start up capital for the business from her dot-com success, was on the original launch team and helped to establish and articulate the values and ethos of the company.

During the first five years of New Seasons, when it was small, struggling and short on cash, it lacked the resources to fill many positions that most companies its size had. For instance, there wasn’t a HR Director until the company had hundreds of staff members. Because Eileen previously had been a HR Director at Nature’s she became the “go to” person for complex human resource issues. Eileen wrote the first staff handbook, setting the tone for the workplace culture. She also helped design the first health insurance program for the staff.

New Seasons didn’t have a Marketing Director until it was about seven years old and during that period Eileen played an active role in conceiving the company’s brand position and promotional themes. She was the author of most of the headlines for the weekly advertising insert and edited copy on a weekly basis.

Eileen’s high tech experience managing complex software projects was valuable when she worked with the team that developed the New Seasons Market website.

Eileen was a spokesperson for the company and made presentations on its behalf at dozens of events. She represented New Seasons Market on the Oregon Health Fund Board, the Oregon Health Policy Board, the Metro Blue Ribbon Bike Trails Commission and the Oregon Business Association Board.

For ten years Eileen and her husband Brian Rohter, then CEO of the company, spent hours around their kitchen table, almost on a daily basis - as many families who start small businesses do - working through the strategic direction and operational details of the company.

Vice President Food and Farms Program

Ecotrust

Nonprofit; 51-200 employees; Environmental Services industry

20012005 (4 years)

While at Ecotrust, a non-profit conservation-based organization, Eileen launched the Food and Farms program, led the Salmon Nation program and served on the executive team. Programs launched included the Farmer-Chef Connection, the Vivid Picture project and SectionZ communications. All projects focused on job and entrepreneurial development with an emphasis on unifying urban and rural communities. She spoke regularly to community groups, university students, foundations, regional development groups on Building Regional Food Economies.

Steering Committee Member

Oregon Solutions

Government Agency; 10,001+ employees; Government Administration industry

20022004 (2 years)

Oregon Solutions, chartered by then Governor John Kitzhaber, is an initiative run by the National Policy Consensus Center at Portland State University - focused on fostering new models for community governance and problem solving. Eileen served as a council member for the Oregon Solutions during the formation of the council and the launch of its earliest projects.
