I executed a contract to optimize and modernize an ailing Java Servlets web application deployed with Java SE 1.2, Tomcat 3.5 and Apache 1. Without documentation or RCS, I assessed XML relational database schema confused by numerous relational disconnects and ignorance of model inheritance, replaced thousands of lines of Java with a few lines of SQL, and designed from scratch a new business logic platform for arbitrary model schema with an extremely modern user experience and an emphasis on code-reuse, flexibility, and productivity. The process necessitated a protracted software upgrade sideshow that wasted hundreds of hours diagnosing and fixing errors bad code. I took a strong position that the old code was a serious liability costing thousands of dollars more to maintain than to replace.
