Domenico Dato’s Summary

Domenico studied Computer Science at University of Pisa and started working on computer networks since 1985.

From 1992 to 1995 he was System Administrator and Network Manager for some of the most important Italian Internet Service Providers, managing Linux servers, Cisco routers and portal services.

In 1995 he joined Medialab at University of Pisa and was involved in research projects for Hewlett Packard and Sun Microsystems.

In 1996 he joined Olivetti Telemedia working in the team that developed Arianna, the first Italian Web search engine.

From 1997 to 1998 he was consultant for the University of Pisa, Italia Online, Sias Srl and other research institutions and companies, working on development of Information Retrieval systems and tools for automatic classification and indexing of Web documents.
He was also involved in the European Project Telematics LE-8303 – EuroSearch, in the European Project Telematics IE-8011– EuroGatherer and in the ESPRIT Project 20574 – MIMICS.

In January 1999 he founded Ideare SpA, a company working on search engines and IR systems. As Technical Director of Ideare SpA and project manager, he developed search engines for Web pages, Audio and Video files, Images, Usenet groups, price comparison and News. He was also involved in developing automatic classification engines, crawling systems and Information Retrieval libraries. As Ideare SpA became one of the Italian leader companies in Internet Search systems, he became responsible of a server farm with more than 200 machines and search services in more than 10 European countries. In 2000 Tiscali SpA, one of the largest European ISP, acquired 60% of the company and later appointed him as President and CEO of Ideare SpA.

In 2005 he moved to the Tiscali headquarters in Cagliari where he now holds the position of Research & Development Manager and is actively working in the area of Semantic Web and Question Answering.
