Director, International Development
I am task-oriented, with a people focus. I continue to enjoy the work of trying to help the Haitian people help themselves into a healthier, more productive and secure future, while enabling average US citizens to step out into volunteer services in ways that benefit many. I am taking a break from full-time Pastoral leadership in a local Church to help Haiti recover from the devastation left by the recent earthquake, but have many more years of leadership left in me. I am also serving as the Project Consultant for Lynchburg Stained Glass Studio in the TN/KY area, and own and operate a 54-ac horse breeding/training farm in the Blue Ridge Mtns. of VA.
This Haitian-run NPO is one of the most respected in Haiti, begun in 2004 to help Haitians to help themselves. It has formed farming and economic cooperatives, provided educational assistance, community composting toilet systems, health education and microcredit lending programs. My role is to connect our Sonje Ayiti programs with international partners...such as our hot habanero peppers and our women's incredible chocolate products. Great things are happening to help Haitians help themselves...not relying on charity, but developing economically sound and sustainable businesses through foreign investors trusting their entrepreneurial skills, great work ethic and unflappable spirit. We are making a huge difference in Haiti, one community at a time.
Serving as Project Consultant for the TN & KY area.
My wife and I own and operate the 54 ac. equine training and breeding facility in the Blue Ridge Mtns. of VA. Our stallion is the nationally recognized Connemara, Tre Awain Goldsmith (TAG), producing outstanding purebred and Connemara/Thoroughbred cross sport horses. We have an outstanding record in Combined Training / 3-Day Eventing competition, which includes three straight National Champions (2011 and 2012 - AEC / Atlanta, Cady-O'Daly Michael, and 2013 - AEC / Atlanta, Cady-O'Daly Gabriel). In 2012, our Daughter, Emily, and her husband, Josh Walker, moved closer to us to help increase our exposure, training, boarding, teaching and sales capacity...and it has paid off in huge, measureable ways. We expanded from averaging 8-10 horses for training, sale and breeding, to 20-23 horses, and sold more competition Connemaras than any other farm in the US in 2013. Our farm and, particularly the work of Emily and Alicia , and the promotional work of Josh, and the continued fine line of young Connemaras and Connemara crosses that TAG has produced is now receiving the significant recognition with in the equine industry that has been a long time coming. With a new crop of spring foals due soon the future continues to shine!
Delivering quality health care to the rural poor in Northern Haiti for over 30 years. What began as a family donation of our 50' motor sailer for use by the Methodist Church in Haiti, has expanded to over 100 trips involving construction projects, aqua-farming, education and healthcare support. We now send over 110 medical professional volunteers into the country each year to the Northern Region of Haiti to provide health care delivery to a rural population of over 45,000 via our Tovar Methodist Clinic. New projects include the development of MicroCredit programs and the construction of sanitary systems in the cholera-prone areas of the country. My role was a manager of all our projects, budget, fund-raising, promotion, recruiting and development director, assisting in the coordination of all of our projects and partnerships. I retired from this position in early January of 2013 to focus my attentions on our work in Haiti through Sonje Ayiti...and to spend more time at the Cady-O'Daly Farm doing all the upkeeps and helping with the horse management.
As an Elder, I served a variety of appointments from a Camp Director (Camp Alta Mons, VA), large Church Associate Pastor (Morrison Mem., Leesburg, FL), rural church(s) (Cartersville Charge / 3 Churches, central VA), small town Pastor (First UMC, Callahan, FL / Kernstown UMC, Winchester VA / Verona UMC, Verona VA), suburban Pastor (Walmsley Blvd. UMC, Richmond, VA / Bonsack UMC, Roanoke, VA / Dranesville UMC, Herndon, VA), new Church (Mountain View UMC, Forest, VA). I oversaw many staff positions, large budgets, serveral large building programs, Christian Education, Day Care and private school programs, and led over 1,000 people into new faith and Church membership. I served as a Conference leader in Youth ministry, Family Services and international mission service. I continue to preach and teach as related to United Methodist Church's mission work in Haiti.
