As a senior tax analyst I am the tax resource person ensuring the accuracy, compliance and integrity of the Canadian & Provincial Income Tax laws, GST/HST legislation, AgriStability & AgriInvest risk management programs for staff and clients of FBC. At the peak of the tax season I’m the resource person for over 900 staff and 50,000 taxpayers. I collaborate with FBC’s marketing team and responsible for all technical material that is released out of our 10 offices across the country. I also act as a liaison between certain federal government departments and FBC when required.
I am also FBC’s Privacy Compliance Officer ensuring we operate within the federal government legislation (PIPEDA) and provincial privacy legislation. I’m also responsible for replying to complaints.
I operate a small tax practice preparing personal and corporate tax returns. I also concentrate on audit defense.
I was the Academic Chair of the BBA – Accounting program as well as the BA – Accounting Diploma program in the School of Business at SAIT. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Business, I was responsible for managing the day to day operations of both programs. I was responsible for delivering a strong academic program, responsible to oversee course development, supervised instructors, support staff and student service advisors. Current we had over 1,200 active accounting students, 10 faculty and 1 student service advisors.
I was responsible for a budget of approximately $500,000 albeit 85% is faculty salaries. I was responsible for managing human resources such as contract instructors. I was responsible for maintaining a Program Advisor Committee, which included members of the 3 accounting professions, CA, CGA, and CMA as well as industry leaders.
In the last twenty-two (22) years with the Canada Revenue Agency, I was exposed to many sections of the office.
As a Team Leader in Tax Avoidance, I managed a team of auditors engaged in audits of domestic and international tax avoidance schemes of varying complexities to ensure compliance with the Income Tax Act. This involved audits of the smallest to the largest national corporations, individuals, partnerships and trusts.
As a tax avoidance auditor, I audited corporate income tax returns independently to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Income Tax Act, which is one of the most complex statutes used in Canadian Society. I audited individuals, partnerships, trusts as well as tax shelters and seismic schemes.
Corporate clients include those with annual gross revenues over $50 million, which includes the largest and most complex business groups of national and multinational corporations.
I was a team Leader for Tax Avoidance auditors in the audits of domestic and international tax avoidance schemes. Supervised other business auditors in planning and conducting audits of large and complex businesses to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Income Tax Act.
The general role of a senior tax manager was to assume the responsibility for the delivery of all taxation services to clients. This includes the delivery of tax compliance, review tax research, initiate and be involved in tax planning, review of financial statement tax provisions and acting as the direct client contact.
Duties included acting as a tax compliance officer, performance councilor to senior accountants or specialists within the team and complete the performance management steps within required timeframes
The general role of a senior tax manager was to assume the responsibility for the delivery of all taxation services to clients. I managed a net fee revenue load of approximately $600,000. In addition to this I was expected to manage my own personal chargeable hours (>1200) plus the chargeable hour targets of 2 other team members (managers or specialists/senior accountants).
Duties included acting as a performance councilor to senior accountants or specialists within the team and complete the performance management steps within required timeframes.
I was also responsible for identifying opportunities for increased services. It was expected that I generate new fees of at least $60,000 per year
