Ideas. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had more ideas than I knew what to do with. And then I discovered that there were some people actually making a living from them. That’s when I joined the ranks of independent freelance writers. One thing I love about being self-employed is the variety in each day—it’s that diversification that I thrive upon.
I’ve written for The Rotarian, Alternative Medicine, Better Nutrition, Relish, Muscle & Fitness HERS magazines, About.com and more. I’m also a contributing editor to CDKitchen’s Kiddie Chow column and Learning Through History. I found a multitude of markets and venues that matched my interests: cooking with kids, alternative fuels, hybrid cars, renewable energy, nutrition and food. And it wasn’t long before I found myself gravitating toward more and more recipe development work, for both national magazines and corporate clients.
I’ve had a long-standing interest in entrepreneurship and belief in "do what you love and the money will follow." To this day, coming up with meal ideas, fast dinner solutions and interesting, delicious food combos—and sharing them with others—is something I enjoy tremendously. And thankfully my kids don’t mind one bit about taste-testing new dishes! In addition to continuing my writing and recipe development, I’m busy working on a new business endeavor that will tie together all of my interests: Queen of the Quick Meal. Look for it to be launched in late 2009.

As a teacher with Brave Writer, I have the privilege to share in kids’ passions, interests and enthusiasm. In teaching the Kidswrite Basic Class, we have six weeks to tap into the words hidden inside each student, to encourage them to realize that they do have important things to share and say, while retaining authorship and ownership of their work.
Working for Brave Writer, I’ve also had the opportunity to create and teach the Nature Journaling course, part of the One Thing series. Capturing the beauty of the natural world in simple sketch and word is something that has helped provide balance in my own life and being able to share it with others has been deeply fulfilling. I also created the 4-week Hand Holders class that offers homeschooling parents the opportunity to gain support in helping their kids take one nonfiction piece of work from initial idea through to its completion.
