Chandak Ghosh is a board-certified ophthalmologist, proficient in all areas of the eye, including cornea-external disease, glaucoma, vitro-retinal disease, and ocular immunology and pathology. A Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, he is currently with Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the USDHHS as a Senior Medical Consultant for Federal Policy. His work led to the development of HRSA’s National Performance Review Protocol.
Dr. Ghosh has been committed to the health needs of minority and underserved populations. He works closely with immigrants in New York as part of his research into the impact of economic downsizing on quality of care. His efforts have led to numerous publications and research presentations, including the landmark “Healthy People 2010 and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders: Defining a Baseline of Information,” (AJPH, December 2003), and “National Newspaper Coverage of Minority Health Disparities, (JNMA, October, 2007), both of which have garnered national recognition.
Other areas of research concentration include ocular disease in diabetes, health communication and literacy, uninsured elderly, and quality measure development. Dr. Ghosh is also a founding board member for South Asian Health Project, an initiative working to achieve health equity for South Asians in the United States.
Among his several awards are Commendation Medals from the U.S. Public Health Service in 2005, 2006, and 2008 for “groundbreaking policy research of national significance.”
After completing his undergraduate studies at Yale, Dr. Ghosh received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia (of VCU) in 1995 and completed a chief residency in ophthalmology at Long Island Jewish Hospital/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1999. He served as a Commonwealth Fund Fellow in Minority Health Policy and received a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University, School of Public Health in 2000.
