What better way to ensure a new generation of responsible citizens than with your local newspaper and Newspapers in Education (NIE)? When teachers and parents employ the techniques and principles gleaned from Erie Times-News in Education programs and projects, students will gain insights about math, history, science and language arts - including different writing styles, the importance of art and photography, and strategies all good writers use to extend the meaning of a text.
Studies done nationally by the Newspaper Association of America have found that students who use the newspaper regularly in the classroom score from 10-30 percent higher on standardized reading tests than students who do not. 1 In addition, students involved in NIE programs become young adults who are more likely to be engaged in their community and continue to read the newspaper after high school.
Due to its living, breathing nature, we affectionately call the newspaper the “remarkable textbook.” The newspaper is a record of history in the making and its relevance captures the interest of readers of all ages.
