Head of Humanities : City of London Academy [Southwark]
London, United Kingdom
I believe that education is a foundation and building block for the future of the individual child and the wider community. Despite the importance of a good education many students do not have access to it, leaving some ill equipped for adulthood. My part in this process is to facilitate access to a future with choices. I place the child at the centre of everything I do, maintaining an environment where all have the opportunity to thrive, succeed and realise their potential. I am active in promoting self-belief and celebrate individual achievement. I lead and inspire colleagues to have a similar focus on the child, seeing them as an individual with unique needs, not as just one amongst many, enabling them to achieve this by putting in place the systems and resources needed to do this in a systematic and informed way.
Over the last three years have engaged in substantial curriculum design, implementing key-stage four and five for the first time at the Academy. Core to this is developing activities to appropriately challenge all students, supporting literacy as well as stretching the most able.
My curriculum resources have been shared with colleagues in schools across the country and have been well received, demonstrated by the positive feedback I have received. This has led to a consultancy with the Historical Association and Training and Development Agency focussing on the design and piloting of a resource pack to support lessons designed more explicitly around functional skills. I am also developing links with the QCA Regional Subject Advisor for Humanities.
In my current roles I have engaged in school improvement projects both within and beyond my faculty, which have had measurable impact on students’ performance, and have enabled me to build strong relationships with students, colleagues, parents and business partners/outside agencies.
