March 2011February 2013 (2 years) Advanced Concepts Team - European Space Agency

The Advanced Concepts Team (ACT) is an interdisciplinary team of the European Space Agency create to perform, monitor and foster research on advanced space systems, innovative concepts and working methods
The team is essentially a channel for the study of technologies and ideas that are of strategical importance in the long term planning of the Agency. It serves the function of a think tank.
Science and engineering research fellows carry out research on advanced topics.

I promoted and followed projects in the field of biomimetics
The research involves behavioral patterns, structures, materials, sensors and mechanisms, mainly belonging to the plant kingdom.

Post-Doc - Australia Award

University of Tasmania

Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Higher Education industry

August 2010February 2011 (7 months) Tasmania, Australia

The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of Europe to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia.
Thanks to this scholarship I spent 6 months in the Stress Physiology Lab of Prof. Sergey Shabala, where I work on salinity stress and acclimation.

Educational Institution; 5001-10,000 employees; Higher Education industry

March 2008July 2010 (2 years 5 months)

I worked in the field of plant stress physiology and plant tropisms (gravity, light, etc.)

Research Fellow

University of Tasmania

Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Higher Education industry

October 2007March 2008 (6 months) Tasmania, Australia

During my Ph.D. studies, I spent five months at the University of Tasmania, Australia, in the Stress Physiology Laboratory of Prof. S. Shabala. Here, I worked as a research fellow, on salinity stress. This fellowship provided the opportunity to learn the unique non-invasive microelectrode technique for measurements of net ion fluxes from plant cells and tissues (the MIFE technique), as well as other advanced electrophysiological methods.

Educational Institution; 5001-10,000 employees; Higher Education industry

January 2005March 2008 (3 years 3 months) Florence Area, Italy

In 2005 I started my PhD in Space Biology under the supervision of Prof. S. Mancuso. This research concerned, focused in particular on the analysis of the early responses of roots in microgravity conditions. Data were obtained during three ESA and one DLR Parabolic Flight Campaigns in Bordeaux, with particular attention to action potentials, Ca2+ fluxes and O2, NO and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The Ph.D. degree, with the thesis entitled “Study of the early phases of gravitropic response in roots” was obtained on March 21st 2008.

Internship program

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Nonprofit; 501-1000 employees; Research industry

September 2002December 2002 (4 months) London, United Kingdom

I studied in the school of horticultural science and worked in the botanical garden helping in the maintainance of the collections. I was assigned at the "hardy display section", and worked most of my time propagating the species in display in the "alpine house".
