Academy of Hope's mission is to provide high quality adult basic education in a manner that changes lives and improves our community.

Since its beginning in 1985, the Academy of Hope has been powered by adult learners, volunteers, donors and staff who are dedicated to building one of the most respected not-for-profit organizations in the Washington, D.C., area. Our award-winning program has become a model for adult literacy programs in the region.

Academy of Hope’s core values guide our decisions and our work:

Support: Academy of Hope creates a supportive and caring community that allows students to feel comfortable and able to focus on their learning.
Empowerment: We give students the tools and support they need to feel confident about returning to the classroom.
Commitment: We never give up on our students. We work with them in the classroom and one-on-one until their learning goals are met.
Personal Attention: We take the time to get to know each individual, and together, we set a course for learning that is right for them.
Professionalism: We hold everything we do to the highest standards.

Ashley Weyenberg's Publications

  • Guide to International Estate Planning; Chapter: United States Tax—International compliance considerations for the individual client

    • American Bar Association—Real Property Trust and Estates Group
    • November 2013

This chapter focuses on the reporting requirements and burdens placed on these taxpayers by the United States (“US”) tax compliance system as a result of holding assets or earning income from outside the US or as a nonresident alien. US reporting obligations may arise due to an individual’s US residency or citizenship, the entity or structure an individual chooses to employ for non-US investment, or the jurisdiction where an individual lives or invests. US tax compliance obligations for reporting foreign income and assets are complex and growing. Since 2008, the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) has increased its enforcement efforts with respect to foreign reporting and the US Congress has introduced several new reporting requirements for US residents with foreign assets and for foreign entities that receive US source income.
