I grew up in action sports writing and editing magazines. I transitioned to youth culture/pop culture media, then advertising copywriting, creative direction, strategic planning and building brands.
Insights into youth culture, fringe culture, and action sports. Brand innovation and marketing, creative thinking, asking questions, planning and strategy, copywriting/journalism/publishing, screenwriting, emerging media, short form video, SWAT teams. The goal is always the same: visionary ideas that people will love.
I also make really good soup.

I was a copywriter, then associate creative director, and finally creative director at Lambesis. The shop created campaigns for Airwalk, bebe, Skyy Vodka, Campari, Cutty Sark, Renaissance cosmetics, and a variety of others. Lambesis was also responsible for publishing the L Report, which provided clients with research on youth culture and trends. The L Report / Airwalk case study is the subject of a chapter in Malcolm Gladwell's book, The Tipping Point.

Grand Royal was a cult favorite; more hybrid annual / almanac than a magazine (due to its yearlong editorial incubation each issue). It was published by the Beastie Boys as a way to connect with their fan base.

Dirt magazine was a general interest/youth culture title for teenage boys. It was the west coast brother to Sassy magazine.

Wizard was responsible for pioneering titles in action sports, mainly focused around the sports of BMX (racing and stunt riding) and skateboarding. We published BMX Action, Freestylin', and Homeboy magazines, and also created a lifestyle/fan club for action sports/underground culture called Club Homeboy that was active from 1986 to 1991.
I got a job as a writer at Wizard Publications directly out of high school, and never went to college. I gained experience as a journalist, editor, advertising copywriter, creative director and brand strategist through trial and error, late hours, and working alongside awesome people.
