I'm a partner development manager at Microsoft's Live Search, where I manage the development of image search, video search, news search, book search, academic search, instant answers (such as the Encarta answer, news answer, image answer, and so on), related searches, and half of the core web ranking and relevance work.
Prior to Microsoft, I was the Associate Professor in Information Retrieval at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. I've published around 70 refereed works, and two best selling books (both for O'Reilly and Associates). My first book, "Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL" has sold nearly 80,000 copies.
I have a PhD in Computer Science, which investigated search algorithms for DNA and protein databases. I also have a Bachelor of Applied Science with first-class honours from RMIT University.
Prior to my PhD, I ran my own IT consultancy from 1990 to 1995, specialising in software for the telecommunications, property, and oil industries.

I spent more than 10 years at RMIT Unversity in Australia, beginning as a sessional lecturer and PhD student, and ending my career there as the Associate Professor in Information Retrieval.
I published more than 70 papers on topics related to search, particularly on search data structures and algorithms, computational biology, video search, image search, and text ranking and relevance. My most-cited paper describes and experiments with techniques for compression of inverted lists for text retrieval applications.
I've advised 12 graduates through their PhDs, and taught nearly 50 courses. I was awarded the Dean's prize for teaching in 2002. I attracted almost $3m in competitive grant funding, including three major Australian Research Council grants.
