James David is an Account Supervisor in the San Francisco office of Racepoint Group, a public relations agency led by Larry Weber and Marijean Lauzier.
Prior to Racepoint, James was the manager of public relations at PlanetOut Inc., a niche-focused media and entertainment company. At PlanetOut, he proactively expanded the sphere of coverage received by the company’s social networking and e-commerce Web sites, magazines, as well as other products. By looking for fresh and unique angles to otherwise narrowly focused topics, he garnered media placements in a myriad of outlets, from top daily newspapers such as The New York Times and USA Today, to influential blogs and broadcast.
James has had a multi-faceted, diverse career in public relations through his clients at Ruder Finn/Switzer and in the environmental practice of Washington, D.C.-based public relations agency Fenton Communications. The main thrust of his duties at Ruder Finn included servicing Sony Electronics’ expansive line of digital imaging products, including digital cameras, camcorders, printers and memory sticks. Other past clients have included: the All American Rose Selections, a kind of “Good Housekeeping” seal of approval for bare-root roses; the Shadow Conventions during the 2000 presidential election, a brainchild of blogger Arianna Huffington; and the Ford Motor Company’s announcement of plans for more fuel-efficient SUVs in 2000.
Additionally, Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams’ Office of Communications brought James in as a consultant in the weeks before Y2K as they beefed up their staff for the roll-over. With the new year safely and uneventfully over, James stayed on and worked on the city’s census awareness campaign: drafting speeches, planning and staffing press events. He also contributed to other office projects, the most memorable being the press conference announcing that Michael Jordan had purchased the city’s basketball team, the Washington Wizards.
James enjoys the challenge of finding ways to make the work of his clients accessible to both enthusiasts and to the general media audience.
