Michael has spent more than 20 years consulting in Business Continuity Management. He has extensive consulting in experience in Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, Crisis Management and Emergency Response for many of North America’s largest organizations. He is President of ReadySmith Inc., experts in preparing organizations to deal with adversity - emergencies, crises, disasters.
As a Managing Director at Marsh Risk Consulting, he was the Global Practice Leader for Business Continuity Management, responsible for business development, practice development, client service delivery, and methodology for 100 Marsh business continuity specialists around the world. Prior to joining Marsh, Michael was a leader in the Business Continuity practice for Ernst & Young in North America. He was also Consulting Principal for IBM Canada’s Business Continuity and Recovery Services. Mr. Smith was founder of Continuum Planning Inc. (acquired by IBM Canada in 1996, to form the IBM Business Continuity and Recovery Services consulting group). Early in his career, Michael worked 14 years of progressively senior IT management positions with large insurance companies.
Michael is a noted speaker and writer. He has written two chapters on business continuity planning for the NFPA 1600 Implementation Handbook due to be published in April, 2007. In the last year, he has been quoted in articles in the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, the Ottawa Sun, the Calgary Sun, the Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune. He has also been on CNN, the Report on Business TV channel, Global News, CTV News, CBC Business Report, and City TV news.
Over the 30 plus years of his career, Michael has lived and worked in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Malaysia, and Singapore.
