Senior Solutions Consultant at Talis
Birmingham, United Kingdom
I am an experienced senior software developer, solutions architect, team leader and IT consultant. My main areas of technical speciality are JEE server side development and architecture – with over 10 years of experience in this field. As a Senior Solutions Consultant I also bring other 'soft' skills to the feast, such as customer facing consultancy, pre-sales, full life cycle project management and all of the usual good stuff associated with a customer facing role, like thinking on my feet in stressful environments and also dealing professionally with difficult situations and conflict. I’m a coder in a suit :-)
My current area of focus is Service Oriented Architecture, web services and business integration. I am heavily influenced by agile software development principles such as test driven development, pair programming, continuous integration and agile project management. I also get bored very very easily.
I have been developing enterprise-scale J2EE applications for large clients in the telecommunications, banking and legal sectors on technologies from Sun, IBM and Oracle and I am currently working in the area of automated library management systems. I get a real buzz from plugging systems together which were never designed to be plugged together.
I am a Sun Certified Java Programmer and Certified SCRUM Master and as a Senior Solutions Consultant at Talis, I am currently leading my customers with integration problems to being successful customers with integration solutions; who have realised all of their benefits of cost savings, efficiency improvements, more jointed up services and better end user experiences – all on a seamless, interesting and fun project journey… Success to me is not always money in the bank, but having a successful customer who had a problem which really made the cogs turn in my head….

This was a paid industrial placement year as part of my Computer Science degree programme. Being my first "real" job in the software industry, this is where I really began to learn my trade and begin to understand the pressures and responsibilities of a software engineer - I also got to do some funky things with the old IBM mainframe. The technologies and the languages I used are nothing like I do today - but the lessons learned were the foundation for and a springboard to a very enjoyable career.... I had some happy times at the MEB…
BSc (HONS), Computer Science, September 1996 — June 2000
I do enjoy a life outside of work too :-) I'm an avid reader and will read anything from Umberto Eco to the back of a shampoo bottle. I enjoy meals out and nights in with my gorgeous girlfriend, long walks in the country - and being a Brummie I’m always eager to get somewhere where there is water – the west coast of Scotland being one of my favourite places in the world. I enjoy travelling on my stomach: I’m happy to go anywhere to experience new and exciting foods and enjoy getting a sense of culture from the different places I visit – next stop is Bulgaria! Also in my spare time I enjoy Freemasonry and pumping iron in the gym and playing with my dog. I’m a big fan of live music and live comedy I enjoy the cinema and the theatre, especially the big musicals. Family and home life are important to me as are my friends. And of course I also enjoy getting a few beers in with the boys when I can....
