I started programming BASIC back in the early 1980's, on a Radio Shack TRS-80, a Sinclair ZX 81 and then ZX Spectrum (with 16k RAM). Went on to buy a Sinclair QL in the mid-80's and stepped up to an intel 80286 PC running MS-DOS around 1988. My brother introduced me to Turbo Pascal 3.0 which still is blazingly fast! Eventually learned the basic object oriented programming concepts from the Borland Pascal 7 manuals (which I still cherish). Learned a slew of more languages after hopping on to the Internet, ranging from REXX on IBM mainframes and OS/2, via Java (which is my current favourite), to XSL and bash.
Even though I've married IRL, I still feel that I'm married with the programmer inside me, which my GF (now wife) isn't quite happy with. I've even held a lot of OOP courses.
I have been told that I have a rare combination of good technical understanding and an ability to see the big picture. At IBM Technical Services, I learned a lot about problem solving. As for seeing the big picture, well I dunno...
Since jumping off the OS/2 bandwagon in 2000 (give me the IBM WorkPlace Shell any day -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workplace_Shell), I've since been playing around diverse Unix-like distributions on a multitude of platforms, from FreeBSD to Gentoo.
I simply love to dig into new technologies. I like to learn by doing; fiddle around with the thing and kick the tires until it works.
