C.K. Sample III’s Summary

These overviews always ring false to me. If you want to know more about my writing skills, then read something I've written. You can find bits and pieces on the web and on my site, Sample the Web (http://www.sampletheweb.com). My goals are also discussed on my About page, but they basically boil down to: I want to write, I want to create, I want to educate, and I want to be the best person I can be. I will succeed at all these things, because I strive to do so daily.

C.K. Sample III’s Experience

  • Editorial Director

    Mahalo.com, Inc

    (Internet industry)

    January 2007August 2008 (1 year 8 months)

I support people and help launch new online brands. During my 18 months at Mahalo, I worked with the rest of the management team to develop and execute the editorial strategy for the site and to discover how to build Mahalo as a sustainable product to provide people with the best links and information online. During my time with Mahalo, I built and managed a great team of 40 full time individuals in Santa Monica dedicated to serving the web by curating all the information available in the search arena. In addition to and through those direct reports, I managed over 200 freelancers working for Mahalo in the Mahalo Greenhouse and over 30 remote hourly workers working worldwide.

  • Consultant

    Self-employed

(Self-Employed; Myself Only; Online Media industry)

  • Director & General Manager, Netscape.com

    AOL, LLC

    (Public Company; Online Media industry)

    November 2006March 2007 (5 months)

Both the editorial and development teams at Netscape report to me. I am both here to serve this great team of people and the great community of Netscape members and readers by helping us all continue to innovate and grow the site.

  • Managing Editor / Lead Anchor, Netscape.com

    AOL, LLC

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; Online Media industry)

    January 2006November 2006 (11 months)

Being the Managing Editor of a social news portal is a somewhat interesting position, and I think it is probably an entirely unique position, as well. I manage a dedicated news team, helping support them in all their endeavors, I coordinate disparate bits and pieces with our developer team, with different AOL business units, with Weblogs, Inc bloggers, and with different event coordinators. I help find good people who are interested in doing good work. Finally, I spend a lot of time crawling Netscape.com, helping to shape the community by preening the occasional bit of spam or clarifying a member-submitted story with a misleading title. At the core, I see this position as an educational one. I'm here to learn and to help facilitate understanding of how things like blogging, social news, citizens media, and journalism can all work together to provide a better contextualized view of the world.

In March, 2005, I began freelance blogging for Weblogs, Inc at The Unoffocial Apple Weblog (TUAW). Shortly after beginning, Judith and Jason asked me to become lead blogger for the site. A few short month later, I began blogging for other Weblogs, Inc. blogs, including Cinematical and TV Squad, where I cohosted TV Squad's Lost Podcast. I retired from active Weblogs, Inc blogging in May 2006 to focus on Netscape.
