Recognizing a critical need in Europe for seed and early stage development assistance, Barend founded Big Bang Ventures (BBV) in 2000. BBV was an ideal opportunity to capitalize upon his successful experiences in the United States with various IT start-ups, venture capital funds, and investment banking.
Today, Big Bang Ventures has grown to Euro 40 million of funds under management, and is considered one of Europe's most promising early stage VC funds to emerge out of the dotcom collapse. Its first fund was at the basis of Datacentertechnologies which was succesfully sold to Symantec in 2005. In addition, BBV, based on an aspiring entrepreneur and business plan only, invested in Clear2Pay in 2001, which was recently validated as Europe's most promising technology company (European Venture Contest organized by the European Commission in 2005).
Immediately prior to establishing Big Bang Ventures, Barend served as interim CEO and co-founder of SwiftTouch Corporation in Boston, Massachusetts, during which he raised $5 million in new funding and attracted senior management to run the company.
In 1997, Barend started FLV Fund in the USA, where, as Director of Business Development, he managed his first investments in high-technology companies, including Telekol (sold to Nokia), ViA, EHQ, Sequoia (Nasdaq IPO: SQSW) and CellPort.
Barend began his career as Financial Analyst for SG Cowen in Boston, Massachusetts, focusing on Internet and data-networking companies.
He currently is a member of the board of directors of Clear2Pay and President of the Benelux Tech Tour 2006.
Barend holds a Master of Science degree in Economics from the University of Louvain, Belgium.

As President of the first Benelux Tech Tour, Barend organized a 3-day event during which over Euro 12 billion of VC funds and top executives from leading technology companies toured the Benelux to visit the 20 most promising private technology growth companies.
Helped by over Euro 150.000 in sponsoring by Euronext, GIMV, the Dutch and Flemish government, the event was widely covered in the press and the feedback by attendees on the event was overwhelmingly positive.
