The IIS Sr. Manager, Public Affairs, is responsible for the public affairs, media relations, social-media outreach and external web communications supporting IIS and its six product lines as well as the executive communications of the IIS business.  In this capacity, the manager will be responsible for working closely with the Vice President, Communications, to develop and implement public affairs, public relations, media relations, media-monitoring, social-media and web strategies to help grow the business and will work with IIS business communicators to execute that strategy.  This position is also responsible for providing communications support on strategic business-development pursuits, externally and internally promoting business capabilities and solutions, and bringing visibility to the quality of IIS’s leadership and the benefits that the business offers to customers and employees.  This individual will be required to work closely and collaboratively with the IIS Business President and other members of the IIS Leadership team as well as product line communicators and business leaders to counsel them in their product-specific public relations and thought-leadership activities, as well as provide hands on-support for those efforts that have broader communications value to IIS and Raytheon as a whole.  The role will have frequent contact with Raytheon’s Corporate Legislative Affairs team in the support of integrated business and enterprise public affairs campaigns.  The position may be located in Dulles, VA, or Garland, TX.

 

 

Key responsibilities:

 

 

  • Lead Executive Communications function for IIS
  • Partner with the Vice President, IIS Communications and Product Line Communications leads to develop a comprehensive, strategic Media/Public Relations plan that positions Raytheon as a leader in its respective IIS markets;
  • produce (identify, research, write) and distribute a steady, strategic stream of news releases and other Raytheon-brand-building, thought-leadership pieces (ex., op-eds) for print and electronic news media;
  • establish and maintain relationships with key trade media;
  • create and continually refine a targeted media database for IIS;
  • work closely with the Vice President and Raytheon Corporate Communications on stories and media placements in tier one business media;
  • pitch stories that differentiate IIS products & services as well as Raytheon to appropriate media;
  • conduct IIS-wide media monitoring and research to assess: Raytheon IIS competitive advantage, positioning of IIS products and services, and competitive intelligence; and proactively develop IIS responses and actions;
  • develop and manage key metrics for all Media/Public Relations, Social Media and Thought Leadership initiatives; develop follow-up actions as appropriate; 

 

  • coordinate with Raytheon Corporate Communications for the approval, timing and approach of external communications to the media;
  • manage issues and potential crises from a media relations perspective;  
  • support the Trade Shows & Exhibits manager and Corporate staff on all IIS media relations leading up to, during, and following major trade shows;
  • serve as Corporate Communications interface on PR/media relations;
  • support product line business communications through collaboration and coordination and help develop and execute strategic communications plans;
  • develop and implement impactful public relations opportunities leading up to, during and after major trade shows;
  • ensure that business leaders are aware of and prepared to address significant press coverage about, and relevant to, the IIS business;
  • serve as company spokesperson for local and regional media (significant pursuits, wins, mergers, recognition, etc.);
  • serve as point of contact for Raytheon IIS material flowing to and from Raytheon Corporate Communications for quarterly and annual reports, as well as other corporate oral and written materials as required;
  • supervise at least 2 direct reports.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • At least 12 years of related experience in successfully managing public relations/media relations and/or public affairs support programs in a military, defense or intelligence setting;
  • Outstanding ability to understand and synthesize complex material into clear and concise news material in accordance with AP style;
  • Extensive experience and successful track record of developing relations with key media (trade and business);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Social Media and how Social Media can/should be used to further the organization’s business goals;
  • Familiarity with a variety of external communications vehicles, practices, metrics and technologies;
  • Knowledge of process improvement tools (e.g. Six Sigma);
  • Prior executive speechwriting is required
  • Demonstrated ability to think analytically
  • Excellent reasoning and decision-making skills
  • Consultative experience with business leaders at all levels
  • Excellent strategic communication planning, implementation and measurement/evaluation skills
  • Project management skills and experience
  • Intercompany and external professional networking skills

Desired Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • · Knowledge of Raytheon and markets where Raytheon IIS participates
  • · Ideal candidate will possess direct military experience, commercial experience in support of military, defense or intelligence programs; and agency experience

 

Required Education (including degree):

 

Bachelors or equivalent degree in journalism, marketing or related field.

 

Other Requirements:

 

Periodic travel required (for company meetings, media visits, professional gatherings, etc.)

Position can be located in Garland, TX or Dulles, VA.
