Principal Engineer - Rotating Machinery - Overview

 

  • Centrica Energy Upstream’s Principal Engineer Rotating Machinery within the central Operations and Engineering function acting as the subject matter expert and leader of the rotating equipment engineering expert and peer network
  • Incorporating all gas turbines, process gas compressors, power generation equipment, large electric motors, reciprocating drives, etc
  • Provide Rotating Machinery Engineering input to developments and projects in both mature and green field developments. Lead relevant engineering studies carried out internally and externally in support of such developments and projects
  • Maintain effective liaison with other functions within Centrica Energy Upstream (CEU) as part of developing robust and optimized solutions
  • Ability to assess operational Rotating Machinery Engineering problems and determine (with others) root causes, and help establish practical solution strategies. · Establish, maintain and expand the “knowledge network” for the Rotating Machinery Engineering area to ensure key learning’s are shared and best practices are used
  • Contribute to peer assists, reviews and formal technical assurance reviews
  • Assist in the development of procedures, policies, Standards and Guidelines. Take ownership of rotating machinery discipline Standards and Guidelines and ensure these are developed, maintained and revised to reflect current thinking on industry best practice and lessons learnt
  • Knowledge management for the rotating machinery function to ensure 'lessons learned' are properly communicated and incorporated into standards
  • Support other functions as necessary with technical guidance on all rotating equipment engineering matters
  • Manage competence assurance for the Rotating Machinery Job Family This requires an experienced individual, who is recognised as the technical authority and focal point for rotating equipment engineering expertise within CEU

Principal Engineer - Rotating Machinery - The Role

 

  • Based in Aberdeen, and reporting to the Chief Engineer Facilities, the job holder will provide day to day Rotating Machinery Engineering support to operating assets to help solve technical problems in order to ensure high levels of production availability whilst improving the safety and integrity of engineering design and operation. This will involve travelling to assets on an as needed basis
  • Support the regions / assets with the planning of routine rotating machinery related inspections ensuring economies of scale are leveraged
  • Provide clear direction as to the compliance with statutory legislation in all Rotating Machinery Engineering areas, audit assets as necessary to ensure compliance
  • Works within a small team of technical professions with considerable interaction with assets at all technical and managerial levels
  • Works with internal stakeholders responsible for developments, projects, operations HSSE etc. Maintain peer relationships with other engineering professionals and functional experts in other CEU departments, assets and regions
  • Maintain external relationships with industry experts, both professional and technical organisations, universities, industry groups, equipment vendors and contractors in the Rotating Machinery Engineering field
  • Ensure that a framework of static Rotating Machinery Engineering technical standards, capturing industry and Company best practice, is produced and applied to all CEU activities
  • Assess, endorse and introduce appropriate new Rotating Machinery Engineering technologies that are appropriate to CEU
  • Support the development and roll out an overall engineering assurance process for operational assets and projects, including the start-up of new facilities that has a strong focus on safety and risk reduction. Support assurance reviews when appropriate.

Desired Skills and Experience

Principal Engineer - Rotating Machinery - The Person

 

  • Extensive experience in upstream engineering and operations which has shown a proven delivery into projects and operations, covering onshore and offshore oil and gas production and associated facilities in a client/operator environment at a senior level
  • Extensive experience of Rotating Machinery Engineering at a senior level in all value chain phases; including concept selection, FEED, detailed design, commissioning and operations
  • Significant experience in client/operator roles in the management of contractors with active involvement in the application of quality assurance and quality control: including reviewing calculations, philosophies and designs
  • Active participation in reviews and in particular risk and hazard assessment activities with the ability to resolve complex Rotating Machinery Engineering problems in a range of contexts from conceptual design to operational facilities. · Degree qualified to BSc. / MSc. / BEng in Rotating equipment Engineering and a Chartered Engineer
  • Very effective interpersonal skills that allow the job holder to strongly influence staff at all levels and across different cultures with strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • A track record of continuing professional development in order to keep abreast of the latest developments relevant to the rotating equipment discipline and the industry in general. · Knowledge of all forms of engineering documentation, including block diagrams, PFDs, P&IDs Data Sheets, Cause & Effect charts and safety critical elements
  • Ability to challenge others in a constructive manner and influence internal peers, internal senior executives and partner’s representatives to influence decisions or ways of working
  • A proven ability to coach, mentor and share knowledge with a team player mindset and the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
