About this job

Job description

Common Sense Media is the leading independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.

Presently we are seeking a highly experienced, entrepreneurial, and mission driven Vice President of Business Development (VPBD) to lead our efforts in this area and to be a critical part of our executive team. The VPBD will drive new business opportunities that will broaden our distribution footprint and generate increasingly substantial revenue for the organization, as well as optimize and extend our existing partnerships.

Common Sense Media’s innovative funding model combines both earned income and philanthropic sources of revenue.  Common Sense Media produces the gold standard in age-appropriate media reviews for parents (movies, TV, games, mobile apps, books, Web sites and music) as well as rich content to help both parents and educators raise kids that know how to use media and technology safely, responsibly and ethically. Our licensing partners include leading media and technology companies such as Comcast, DIRECTV, Time Warner Cable, Yahoo, Best Buy, Symantec, Cox Communications, Verizon, Netflix, Fandango, AOL and many others.

The successful candidate will have deep experience in digital media business development, outstanding strategic and creative thinking skills, a collaborative work style and a strong track record of prospecting and closing new business. The ability to work across multiple functional areas and management levels is critical: you must be comfortable and effective dealing with senior executives and board members as well as functional specialists such as product managers and editors.  Experience in the education market is significant plus.

The VPBD will be based in San Francisco and serve as a member of the executive team. The position will report to the President/Chief Operating Officer. Both the Director of Business Development and Director of Partner Relations report the VPBD. Some travel will be required.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Lead the research, cultivation and closing of new business partnerships that: increase distribution of Common Sense Media content, promote our brand, and monetize our content

Provide leadership to the organization regarding competing services and new opportunities; help develop product offerings that align our strategic interests with those of current/potential partners

Deliver amazing value to each and every relationship.
