Position Summary: 

The incumbent plans, organizes, and directs the operations of the Business Development Department to ensure effective formulation and execution of business development strategies across the Enterprise.  Incumbent is responsible for positively impacting the institution’s growth and financial results through sales and outreach efforts within the hospital’s service area and identified growth areas.  Provides effective management of assigned staff. 

 

This position is the most senior Business Development professional in the organization and reports directly to the Chief Strategy Officer.

 

Salary Range:  Salary Commensurate with Education and Experience

% Effort

BUS DEV:  Acts as a conduit between community physicians and the UC Irvine Healthcare system.  Calls on current customer accounts and assists in establishing new customer accounts. Resolves service issues with payers, physician groups, nursing and case managers. Upon implementation of each new relationship, pursues new patient flow mechanisms for the organization.

BUS DEV:  Provides direction and oversight to the Medical Center’s Speakers Bureau.  Develops and implements strategic plans to market the speaker's bureau program to the referring physician and managed care community. Identifies and cultivates opportunities to showcase UCI physicians at speaking engagements.

BUS DEV:  Creates and executes business development plans and strategies targeting inpatient, outpatient, and Medicare growth within specified product lines.  Establishes relationships with physicians to understand and translate complex product lines, programs and services for external customers.  Works with various managers and staff in the organization for the development, production and marketing of value added programs and services.  Implements such business plans, tracks performance, and makes modifications / tactical adjustments as required.  Reports results to Senior Management as necessary or requested.

MGMT:  Creates a safe work environment that fosters respect and positive morale.  Effectively allocates and evaluates department work, determines required staffing levels, and provides leadership and follow through to ensure that business development services are delivered in a timely, efficient manner.  Accepts responsibility for decisions and effective communication. Provides effective human resources management including hiring, firing, training, annual performance evaluations, and corrective action.

Demonstrates strategic thinking in effectively developing departmental goals and objectives that are consistent with the UC Irvine Medical Center institutional goals and objectives. Desired Skills and Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • A minimum of 7 years experience managing multiple product lines, preferably in a non-profit or academic hospital setting
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience with related accomplishments in performance, development, productivity, and cost management
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the HealthSystem
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Strong planning, financial and analytical skills to effectively evaluate and lead projects of major impact to the organization
  • Ability to manage staff and resources consistent with goals, and in keeping the organizational vision and values. Ability to delegate and empower staff and build strong employee morale
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically to problem solve
  • Full understanding of and ability to effectively respond to elements that drive competitive advantage under dynamic conditions such as health care industry changes, competitor actions, legal/regulatory changes and technological trends
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Bachelor's degree in business related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Experience managing multiple responsibilities while maintaining excellent customer service standards
  • Proven track record in growing commercial/Medicare

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of  standard hospital policies, procedures and forms
  • Conceptually understands electronic medical records
  • Knowledge of lean six sigma process improvement methodologies
  • Understanding of Stark regulations as pertinent to physician relationships
