Job description

The ideal candidate is a keen Strategist, able to work closely with the VP/GMs - Sales and other Management Team members in implementing business initiatives, aligned with the annual business plan.  Functional interactions include: Retail, Finance and Commercial Development.

  • Works directly with VP/GM of Sales, Natural and key Broker Partners - providing strategic direction, guidance, and support to achieve Smart Balance Inc. profit, revenue, margin, and share and distribution goals.


Is accountable for:

  • Smart Balance, Inc (Earth Balance, Glutino, & Udi’s) product category profit & loss
  • Collaboration with all Natural Region  VP/GM’s, Regional Managers, agency partners, and Commercial Development team in developing, implementing and managing the annual business plan with assigned customers.]
  • Direct account management experience responsible for calling on top tier Customers in the Natural Class of Trade.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leadership:  Provide overall leadership across Region, Presence Marketing leadership, and internal Smart Balance departments on key initiatives.
  • Owner / Co-author of Region Customer Strategy, working closely with the VP/GM of Sales.
  • Co-Own Commercial New Product Strategy, Deploy 1st to Market launch initiatives and capabilities with VP/GM of Sales, Commercial Development and New Products team.  Set customer objectives and strategies and go to market plan, along with investment requirements and ROI.
  • Provide Forecasts: Ensure the timely and actionable forecasting of agency and customer needs in collaboration with VP/GM of Sales with regard to profit, revenue, margin and share goals.  Forecast trade investment and all region budgets, and program characteristics with implementation timing in concert with Finance and VP/GM’s.
  • Enhance Customer Contact: Help enhance customer contact to achieve penetration at the senior management level and across functional areas that can drive enhanced Smart Balance and agency business performance.

Desired Skills and Experience


  • B.A./B.S. Business Degree
  • 10+ years field Sales Experience in Natural channel with Consumer Products Companies
  • Experience in grocery, spreads, dairy, frozen and gluten-free
  • Extensive field sales experience within a natural consumer products company
  • Expert skills in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word
  • Proven strong influential-leadership methods
  • Independent owner, able to lead initiatives – while informing key stakeholders
  • Flexible/receptive to change in a nimble, fast-paced, entrepreneurial organization
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
  • Strong organizational skills.  Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent negotiation, communication and interpersonal savvy
  • Confident leader capable of working with all levels and backgrounds
  • Travel requirements:  50% of the time


  • Must live in Northern California
  • Home office required
