Job description

We are currently looking for a Product Manager with responsibility for force protection products in the Research & Development sector of the business.


  • Liaise with potential customers and industry stakeholders to ensure that their needs are clearly understood and that the design can be modified incorporate key elements as appropriate.
  • Responsible for the generation of the requirements specification for product and variants – the market requirements.  This should be based on experience of similar products manufactured in the past, analysis of competitors’ products, capturing the opportunities offered by technical advances and a view of market demands gathered from existing and potential future customers.
  • Generating and maintaining the product road map and strategy in alignment with identified market opportunities and marketing strategies. Responsible for full product life-cycle.
  • Preparation and implementation of the product business case, including target costs, prices, quantities, reinvestment and timescales in an investment appraisal, taking into account any impact on existing products and the product road map.
  • Creation of the product price list, in co-operation with a commercial manager.
  • As the internal customer for the development project and therefore the successful candidate will be responsible for confirming that product performance is in line with derived product requirements.
  • Monitoring progress during product development to ensure that customers’ needs expressed in the business case are met.  The Product Manager will attend regular reviews of the product development project(s) to ensure major design decisions and implementations meet the market requirements.  Market requirements may change during the development phase and the Product Manager will feed these into the development project(s).
  • Setting product development priorities in order to deliver product portfolio strategy and value
  • Communicating the status of new product developments to marketing colleagues and ensuring that the technical features of the product are clearly understood.  The Product Manager will develop and maintain a product marketing strategy and plan and “go to market” activities each financial year and monitor progress against plan.
  • Monitoring and analysing competitor and regulatory activities to assess strategy.
  • Ensuring the provision of appropriate information to support the approach to market.  This should include technical manuals, applications information and other sales support literature.
  • Planning and implementing promotional activities in partnership with the Account team and Marketing to support the launch and continued sales of the product.  This will include visits to target customers, arranging trials with them, presentations to sales and marketing colleagues, preparation of sales argumentation portfolios, etc.
  • Taking input from the Product-Development Project-Manager regarding performance against Test-specifications to prove conformance with Product design requirements. Liaising with the QA Representative to check that all product-release documentation is complete and the product has been completed in line with Quality-documentation.  Monitoring feedback regarding in-field performance and quality.


Due to the nature of this position, candidates must be willing to undergo, and eligible to achieve HMG security clearance (prior to appointment). As a result, candidates must hold a British passport and have resided in the UK for the last 5 years.

Desired Skills and Experience



  • Detailed understanding of the product applications.
  • Understanding of marketing issues (eg product, pricing, positioning, promotion etc.)
  • Able to quickly develops an understanding of the organisation and internal relationships including production, service, commercial etc
  • Ability to optimise product specification in line with a detailed analysis of true customer requirements in a constantly changing technical environment.
  • Ability to make correct judgements about customer benefit of different technical features and the commercial impact of incorporating them
  • Ability to interface with potential and current customers in a professional manner
  • Familiarity with relevant certification issues and requirements.
  • A strong emphasis on creativity and the generation of ideas





  • Understanding of the Force Protection Market including DISABLE, DETECT and DEFEAT. The ideal skill set is experience of managing products and experience of the target market for the product being managed. Ability to relate to customers, understand their requirements and translate these to product features is key to specifying/maintaining a successful product.
  • Ideally experience covering different functional areas including technical, projects, products, sales and marketing. Experience of product requirements gathering and lifecycle management.
  • Negotiating within and influencing multi-level teams and customers. Championing the product internally and externally.
  • Product sales are global, hence intercultural issues are important.


Additional requirements:


  • BA, BSC, BEng or higher degree qualification in business or technical subject
  • Regular contact with representatives of customers, suppliers and a wide range of company employees in different roles and locations is required.
  • Role is based at Roke, however requires willingness to travel to customers.
