This position will be located at Wrigley's Global Innovation Center, and report to the Associate General Counsel - Intellectual Property. The Sr. Docketing Specialist is responsible for managing the Company's patent rights, patent portfolio and IP-related agreement portfolio globally.  The position will ensure that all appropriate steps are timely taken in each jurisdiction globally to secure and perfect Wrigley's rights.  The position is also responsible for managing oppositions and litigation to ensure timely action to enforce or defend Wrigley's valued patent portfolio globally.  The position is responsible for maintenance of the patent portfolio including critical reviews of the portfolio against Wrigley's long-term business and strategic interests in light of competitive trends to ensure efficient management of Wrigley's patent assets while ensuring Wrigley does not lose its valued IP around the world.  The position will also manage Wrigley's relationships with outside counsel and ensure effective interaction between outside counsel and the IP team.  The position will also ensure that the IP team is appropriately trained in patent processes and procedures and is provided with appropriate tools and resources to efficiently prosecute Wrigley's patent assets globally.  The position will engage and respond to outside counsel and respond to patent offices globally as appropriate.  The position requires at least ten years of experience in corporate, commercial or IP legal matters including experience in IP docketing.  
  • Manages existing patent portfolio and filings.  Includes:  Files applications, responses and other filings with the USPTO and with foreign PCT offices and manages the filing and prosecution of patents globally.  This includes review and management of all communications in connection with patent prosecution, ensuring appropriate steps are taken (either by the Sr. Docketing specialist or by directing IP team members) to secure and perfect IP rights globally.  Position will manage and update systems for tracking requirements, actions, status, needed information/documentation and all other aspects of patent prosecution, oppositions and maintenance.  This includes docketing all USPTO, PCT and outside counsel correspondence, reviewing and processing all incoming communications, creating new cases and entering due dates and tracking information and generating reports.  Position utilizes expertise to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of all responses and actions, and makes/directs changes where needed, to efficiently file and prosecute patents and ensure compliance with jurisdictional requirements to avoid costly fines, litigation, and/or loss of rights in a particular jurisdiction.  Position is responsible for preparing and filing necessary documents with USPTO and submitting official documents to outside counsel including assignments, powers of attorney, oaths and declarations.  Reviews filing geographies to ensure decisions are in line with strategies and conducting regular reviews of the portfolio in light of Wrigley's long-term business and technical strategic objectives ensuring efficient management of spend in relation to the patent portfolio and all necessary steps are taken in a timely manner to maintain valued patents.
  •  Ensure IP team is appropriately trained in patent related regulations and procedures to efficiently and effectively secure patent rights globally.  This includes developing appropriate resources and tools, providing regular feedback and sharing of best practices as well as ensuring learnings are shared across the team.
  • Manage and maintain relationships with outside counsel globally including ensuring team needs are being met in an efficient and effective manner and ensuring outside counsel complies with all Wrigley requirements.  Monitors work performed by outside counsel to identify trends, raise issues, share best practices and assist/direct the IP team in more efficient and effective use of outside counsel.
  • Ensures the appropriate tools and systems are in place for docketing, searching, prosecution, agreement management, research and IP-related services including performing periodic assessments and audits to determined use and effectiveness.  Position will also coordinate with other Mars segments to capture synergies where appropriate and to provide efficient use of outside tools/resources where appropriate.
  • Preparing and assisting in the preparation and negotiation of IP-related agreements including managing and updating systems for tracking agreements, developing and maintaining templates, develop training and tools for clients and provide client training and assistance.

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.  

  • Ten+ years of legal experience including experience with patent docketing.
  • Demonstrated familiarity and competence in the use of computer data bases and systems.
  • Proven track record in assignments requiring extreme attention to detail, reliability and individual initiative

  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite products.  Familiarity with CPG operations a plus.
