About this job

Job description

We are always looking to ensure that our stores, customers and patients look good and feel great.  In fact that’s why we’re investing in our IT systems specifically designed around them.  We are continuing to develop our own in-house Enterprise Architecture team to work on a variety of exciting projects and ideas to deliver continuous improvements to our stores and customers alike.

We are looking for someone with solid Business, Application and Information Architecture experience, who will be an integral part of the IT Strategy & Architecture Team.  The successful candidate will play a key role in IT, providing strategies & roadmaps, innovative ideas & solutions, principles & standards, and quality solutions architecture deliverables.

This is a truly exciting and dynamic role, in a business which is constantly innovating and changing, any two days are unlikely to be the same.  As a successful candidate, you will need to be the link between the Solution team, IT partners and the wider business to develop quality solutions architecture deliverables and ensure the delivery of fit-for purpose retail and healthcare solutions.

Main Responsibilities & Ways of Working:

  • Take responsibility for business (e.g. loyalty, marketing, commercial & trading, healthcare) and/or technical domains (e.g. information & data)
  • Develop IT roadmaps for your domains, articulating the current, long term and evolving states from both business and technical viewpoints, at varying stages of detail
  • Evaluate technologies and conduct feasibility studies to validate business benefits as part of the creation of architecture strategies.  As a thought leader in your domain, you will propose and be asked to review innovative ideas and solutions, have to keep a careful balance between technology opportunities & business demand, and have to carry out financial assessments on proposals to understand the true cost and value of them
  • Maintain a strong understanding of (and input towards), the Boots IT strategy, commercial frameworks within IT and overall Enterprise Architecture direction and apply this knowledge to recommendations and architecture within individual solutions
  • Network externally to gain insights about business and technology solutions in peer organisations and developments in the IT industry to drive innovation and options
  • Build relationships and get buy-in from stakeholders including those within IT as well as those senior stakeholders in the business areas
  • Demonstrate a strategic and consulting approach to problems, taking a step back and understanding complex problems, and developing presentations and roadmaps which are easy for stakeholders to understand and buy-in to
  • Demonstrate commitment and hard work, by being flexible and demonstrating a natural drive which can help you to become a senior leader of the Boots IT team in future.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • To succeed, you must combine a relevant degree qualification or equivalent with a track record in architecture, design and technical expertise, within a major retail or healthcare environment
  • You’ll also need a logical approach to problem solving, and the ability to constructively review solutions proposed by our development teams and business stakeholders
  • Ideally you will have experience in carrying out consulting-type work, either internally or externally
  • You should have a creative and innovative approach to designing IT solutions
  • You should have experience in influencing senior stakeholders and challenge where necessary
  • You must be able to develop high quality and concise architecture recommendations and deliverables
  • You need to be able to lead and motivate both internal and virtual teams

You will have at least one of the following areas of experience and expertise:

  • Business and technical knowledge and experience in retail commercial and marketing areas (e.g. Retail Trading, Space and Range, Marketing, Customer Insights, Loyalty)
  • Business and technical knowledge and experience in Multichannel, Digital Retailing Strategy and Online / eCommerce (Mobile, Social, Web, In Store)
  • Business and technical knowledge and experience in healthcare solutions, including patient records, dispensing solutions and hospital &  government collaboration
  • Business and in-depth technical knowledge and experience of business information and data in a retail and/or healthcare environment (e.g. Big data, Customer Insights & Analytics, Social Media, Master Data Management, Information Governance and Standards...)
