SUMMARY 

Working as a Middle Market Underwriter the person in this position applies underwriting guidelines in assessing risk factors of applications and quotes or declines applications based on available information and authorized authority level.  This position requires a solid insurance foundation with an emphasis on workers’ compensation insurance including general and state specific rates, rules and regulations and exceptions. The underwriter will be held accountable for managing all aspects of a designated book of business within a designated underwriting authority.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Accountable for underwriting decisions of a designated book of business.
  2. Provides the highest level of customer service to agents, policyholders and co-workers
  3. Maintains a high level of renewal retention through disciplined underwriting and pricing practices.
  4. Increases new business submission activity through effective marketing of our agency plant, knowledge of the marketplace, and identifying within company guidelines target accounts.  Develops and maintains relationships with assigned agents and brokers by effective marketing calls and continued customer service. Markets Company products and services to designated agents and brokers to include claims services, loss prevention, underwriting and audit.
  5. Reviews and analyzes new business risks for acceptability in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  6. Secures, evaluates and interprets information to select, classify, and rate risks as well as the ability to read, write, and interpret policies and forms.  Understands the impacts of change; explains decisions and identifies and resolves customer problems and issues.
  7. Independently applies subjective judgment in considering program alternatives and selecting appropriate course of action.  Makes appropriate and rational decisions on issues within authority and provides recommendations for those exceeding authority levels.
  8. Participates with management in development of underwriting strategies that are necessary for the Division to succeed in its mission of increasing revenue and profits through risk selection and risk evaluation to conform to the Company underwriting guidelines.  Implements and monitors these strategies, as required.
  9. Takes an active role in coordinating daily work activities and training/mentoring efforts with junior team members.
  10. Willingness to learn new tasks and increase technical knowledge. Acts as a department resource for underwriting technical knowledge.
  11. Takes the lead in special projects and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by underwriting manager or supervisor.
  12. Works effectively under minimal supervision; manages a large volume of telephone calls, faxes, e-mails with timely responses to customers in a variety of circumstances. Provides service through an understanding of services including audit, loss prevention, and claims that provide additional value to the worker’s compensation product.
  13. Works effectively in a team environment.
  14. May be required to work outside of core business hours depending on business needs.
  15. Other duties as assigned or as situation dictates.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Working conditions are typical of a fast-paced, sometimes demanding office environment. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • There is frequent use of telephone and computer keyboard.

This position may require approximately 25% of time for travel to other work or office locations, usually by automobile or airplane. 

Desired Skills and Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • BA/BS in insurance, accounting, business, finance, marketing and/or related fields.
  • A combination of education and additional experience in commercial lines underwriting may be substituted for a BA/BS Degree.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, listening, interpersonal, customer service and telephone skills. 
  • Above average skills using personal computers, including data entry, word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Must demonstrate understanding working knowledge of  both NCCI Core State and California Underwriting Guidelines
  • Must understand and demonstrate working knowledge of “class fit” underwriting.
  • Working knowledge of business office practices and procedures, English grammar, spelling and business math.
  • Skills required to develop a presentation and to present in a sales environment as well as in a training environment.

 

PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Maintain State license(s) where applicable. 
  • Complete minimum Continuing Education Units in Property & Casualty as guided by individual state jurisdiction guidelines.
