Team Overview   EDC's Credit Insurance Underwriting group provides accounts receivable insurance to protect Canadian businesses against the risk of non-payment by U.S. and foreign customers.   Customers are served by seven industry sector teams: Transportation; Information & Communication Technologies; Extractive; Infrastructure & Environment; Resources; Light Manufacturing and Small Business.   The group is looking for a dynamic and motivated underwriting professional who will actively participate in the attainment of the team's objectives through the analysis of buyer credit worthiness and underwriting of policies and parameters that support the specific service needs of the sector team.   Responsibilities

  • Manages standard transactions within a portfolio of accounts and proportionate share of team workload with minimal guidance
  • Recommends and approves buyer/credit limits within own portfolio within specified parameters, including DOA, policies and guidelines; will consider policy holder risk return profile
  • Assesses the creditworthiness and risk level of the buyer based on the financial review of the buyer as well as the assessment of other factors such as country economic conditions, payment terms etc.
  • Identifies and recommends techniques for mitigating risks
  • Assesses the risk of the proposed solutions and establishing appropriate transaction terms and conditions
  • Supports the Business Development Group throughout the sales cycle, in delivering high level service to the prospect, crafting and positioning solutions and participating in joint prospect calls as required
  • Assists in screening opportunities, including determining eligibility of customers and other counter parties for consideration of EDC's various products and offering possible solutions
  • Actively participates in the attainment of the team's objectives, which will include customer acquisition and retention
  • Ensures discipline regarding data integrity

Desired Skills and Experience

Screening Criteria

  • Bachelor of Commerce and relevant work experience or MBA
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of relevant financial services experience
  • Financial transactional experience at EDC and/or commercial financial institution
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in French and English
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a high performing culture

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to read and interpret financial statements
  • Strong analytical and financial analysis skills
  • Understanding of bank term sheets, guarantees, stand-by L/Cs and ILCs
  • Understanding of complex contracts and potential legal implications of clauses
  • Solid knowledge of international business practices and international trade
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, presentation)
  • Effective negotiation skills (external and/or internal)
  • Strong customer insight and business acumen
  • Ability to generate new continuous improvement ideas for EDC by working closely with colleagues, customers and key intermediaries


  • International and/or commercial banking experience
  • CFA, CA, CMA or CGA designation

Salary Range

  $57,500 - $80,100  

** Please note that we will consider candidates at the Underwriter - Credit Insurance level (2) & Underwriter - Credit Insurance level (3) depending on the incumbent's qualifications.**
