Job description

The purpose of the Application Architect role is to lead and manage the effort to ensure that common architecture decisions are implemented consistently across the business and IS in order to support the business and IS strategy globally.  They will also research, analyse, design, propose, and deliver IS architecture solutions that are appropriate for the business and IS strategies in one or more applications. 


Application Architect will work with the appropriate business and IS stakeholders, to design a technical structure based on appropriate standards and processes, ensuring that they meet the strategic needs of the business and integrate with other business and IS Processes.


The Application Architect leads the effort to provide integrated systems analysis and recommends appropriate hardware, software, and communication links required to support IS goals and strategy.


The Application Architect will assist in the definition of the framework for application innovations. Facilitating the process of innovation opportunity identification and development drawing on inputs from the business, across IS, external thought leaders and vendors.



The Application Architect will focus on six key areas:


Strategy and Alignment

  • Understand, advocate and support the enterprise's IT strategies
  • Direct effort to define architecture standards that are aligned with business goals, IS strategy and enterprise architecture visions globally
  • Lead contribution to the definition of conceptual and logical application architecture specifications for IS globally (specifically Global SAP Architecture)
  • Ensure that architecture decisions are consistent and leverage opportunities for common approaches
  • Approve all global architecture designs and ensure Global technology is aligned with SABMiller’s global architecture and design policies
  • Develop the business case for future global application requirements
  • Track and manage business benefits delivered by strategic applications architecture
  • Facilitate the process of innovation opportunity and initiation
  • Ensure that the organisation has a systematic approach toward examining new technologies and utilising core IS assets that address both the fundamental business goals and persistent business needs.

Communication / Collaboration

  • Serve as the S&A touchpoint for external requests and queries, and provide education on enterprise architecture directions and goals
  • Lead the management of organisational impacts of architectural decisions and implementation
  • Lead architectural efforts, utilising cross-functional knowledge (strategy, change management and business process management)
  • Provide architecture direction and guidance to solution architects and technical staff

Architecture Development

  • Lead effort to analyse IS industry and market trends and determine potential impact upon SABMiller
  • Lead effort to identify and analyse business drivers to derive business, information, technical, and solution architecture requirements
  • Develop overall architecture approach for all layers of a solution where appropriate
  • Lead effort to work with the business users, enterprise architect and application developers to develop the overall application level architecture
  • Assist in the development of architectural best practices and standards
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to Architects

Architecture Implementation

  • Lead effort to implement overall architecture approach for all layers of a solution
  • Lead effort to ensure that enterprise architecture standards, policies, and procedures are enacted uniformly across application development projects and programs
  • Review the deliverables throughout the development cycle to ensure quality and traceability to requirements and adherence to all quality management plans and standards

Architecture Analysis and Consultation

  • Lead effort to review and provide input on proposals from an architectural perspective, including feasibility, practicality, technical viability, and consistency
  •  Assess and recommend infrastructure and application solutions for upgrades to meet business needs

Architecture Support

  • Exhibit a strong understanding of the IS architecture as a whole (in particular the application domain)
  • Develop strong knowledge base in particular application
  • Lead effort to support lines of business, support staff and technology areas who are implementing projects that impact the architecture

Desired Skills and Experience

Knowledge and Experience Required


Core Knowledge and Experience:

  • IS Technology degree essential


Role Specific Knowledge and Experience:

  • Experience leading and directing application enterprise architecture at the global level
  • Experience in business architecture, consultative stakeholder management and strategic planning
  • Experience of working in a multi-vendor IT sourcing environment (preferred)
  • Deep knowledge of application enterprise architecture best practice and governance
  • Experience of working in large scale technology led change programmes
  • Experience of structuring and facilitating the process of innovation within an IS function.
  • Experience of working with SAP, with detailed knowledge of SAP architecture and requirements
  • Experience leading innovation through architectural design strategy
  • Strategic planning capabilities (approaches and processes, tools, deliverables) and ability to understand industry trends, future competitor's strategies and product roadmaps
  • Understanding of the application enterprise architecture discipline, processes, concepts and best practices
  • Advanced understanding of IT industry trends, enterprise standards and methodology, TOGAF proficiency is essential
  • Experience in issue resolution
  • Deep technological knowledge

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft PowerPoint, Project, Word and Excel
  • Good command of written/verbal business English (& additional location language requirements)
  • Strong system aptitude / affinity with technology
