Responsibilities

The key role of this position is that of contributor to the planning and delivery of a project. This position

will be accountable for contributing to the concept, development and design of complex components,

subsystems or processes. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies design problems and

resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team

leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with

different units, suppliers, customers and/or other teams. This requires the ability to communicate

technical information in a concise and accurate manner.

Decisions made may affect the project team and its delivery of the project. Decisions may significantly

impact on negotiations with suppliers, leveraging new technologies, warranty, costs, sales and customer

perception.

Success factors for the position include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of

engineering concepts. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for cost, reliability and

performance, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up-to-date on changing

customer needs as the project progresses, to stay current with new technology, and to provide guidance

and direction on the project to less experienced engineers and technicians. Incumbents may be

expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.

Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: design and

promote new components and subprocesses; perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new

products or processes; perform product maintenance; keep up to date on new technologies or develop

new technologies; communicate technical information to customers, team members, suppliers and other

units; and support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and

suppliers.

Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying

abreast of technology. Key skills to be developed at this level are failure prediction and management,

technology time/cost analysis, spatial design, conceptual design, practical application of theory,

knowledge of the NPI process and

communication skills.

Desired Skills and Experience

 

Qualifications

Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Engineering, Materials Science, or Computer Science from an accredited

school.

-A minimum of 3 years job related experience.

Experience in product and system design, including tasks such as concepting, analyzing, preparation of

production drawings, conducting design reviews and troubleshooting of field performance problems.

Ability to create designs of complete components, units, and assemblies which are functional, reliable,

and cost-effective by utilizing creativity, innovation, and design expertise, interfacing with vendors as

required.

Experience in design performance checking and approving completed designs to assure functionality,

reliability and completeness of design.

Must possess good verbal and written skills for the exchange of information between supervisor, fellow

team members, internal and external customers.

High level of self-motivation and drive to work in a fast-paced, challenging, and fluid environment of new

product development.

Experience utilizing 3-D design software such as Pro/E or Solidworks.

Must possess good time and project management skills.

While not a major component, some travel (less than 5%) may be required.

 

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with mobile, off road mining equipment.

Experience in a mining environment.

Experience in heavy structure manufacturing.

Experience with mechanical systems such as drivetrain, hydraulics, structural analysis, etc.

Experience creating weldments and machining drawings.

Experience working with forgings and castings.
