A longtime newspaper journalist, Steve Yelvington founded Star Tribune Online (later rebranded startribune.com) in Minneapolis in 1994 and built it into one of the top-ranked newspaper sites in the world. As executive editor and network content director for Cox Interactive Media, he supervised a nationwide network of city sites. At Morris Communications, he led site design and development operations that yielded more Digital Edge and EPpy awards than those of any other newspaper company. In 2001, Editor and Publisher magazine presented him with the EPpy Award for Individual Achievement, and in 2007 the Newspaper Association of America gave him the Online Innovator Award.
As a strategist, he concentrates on horizon-watching and longterm vision, helping Morris companies adapt to a world in which the basic rules of media are being rewritten by the Internet. He has a special interest in organizational strategy and innovation processes, and served on the steering committee for the American Press Institute's NewspaperNext program.
Yelvington has been a featured speaker at online news gatherings throughout the United States and in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Russia and China. He writes regularly for the Poynter Institute's E-Media Tidbits weblog and maintains his own blog at http://www.yelvington.com/.
