Senior Instructional Technologist designing and building "e-learning" products for public health and preparedness training. Interested in experiential and transformational learning design for immersive digital environments (you know, the medium formerly known as multi-user virtual environments MUVEs), including Second Life. My Second Life avatar is Wuzzadiva Iddinja.
Official speaker bio: Karen Ngowe is a specialist in web-based instructional design serving the CDC Office of Workforce and Career Development, Training Services Division. Before coming to the CDC, Karen served in the Michigan Department of Community Health Office of Public Health Preparedness as the education and training (Focus G) coordinator, principal administrator for the MI-TRAIN learning management system and Macromedia Breeze (now Adobe Acrobat Connect) Webconferencing server. Her responsibilities in the OPHP also included creating multimedia instruction for online delivery via MI-TRAIN and/or CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and live webcast. While working in private industry, Karen designed web-based training for clients such as Rockwell Collins, PepsiCo, and the Michigan Department of Education. Her graduate school assistantship with MSU-VITAL (Virtual Interactive Teaching and Learning) involved project management, content development, and site design for the UAW Daimler-Chrysler’s LearnNTC.com portal. Karen holds degrees in Vocal Performance and Applied Linguistics/TESOL from Indiana University, as well as Educational Technology, and Educational Administration for Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) from Michigan State University. To add to her eclectic resume, Karen has taught English as a second language at the college and university level, sung opera professionally (mezzo-soprano), and earned a black belt in Chinese Shao-Lin Kung Fu.
