There's nothing like getting outside your comfort zone to stimulate growth and build new skills. I am finding new ways to apply a customer focus everyday such as setting up a company website, blogging and adding comments that help people learn or get ideas, individual consultations, copy writing, email lists, and product development. It's easy to build a product but getting customers and taking responsibility for their progress is where the work is really at.
Everything I know about programming, I learned myself by working on projects and trying and testing things to see what worked. Eventually, I was skilled enough in programming to be recruited by Microsoft where I spent 8 years and had the opportunity to contribute to some very valuable projects. The same process got me started in electronics and led to winning state competitions and a full scholarship. There is something about taking responsibility for personal learning that I believe leads to far greater results. I look forward to the day when degrees are optional and employers value skills, character traits, and teamwork above all else.

Electronic Thinking helps people aged 19-30 learn practical and applied electronics to get a better job or reinforce a college education.
I left Microsoft to start this company so that you could benefit from my experience in personal, self-paced learning to gain real-world skills in electronics, programming, machining, and marketing. I believe that it matters more what you can do along with your drive and determination to always improve yourself than it does what school or background you come from.
You might wonder why marketing is listed with engineering skills. The reason is that it is easy for engineers to develop expertitis and forget that the real work in developing a product is in keeping the customer's needs first and always being able to translate a product's value into something that the customer can relate to.
