Victor Welling's Summary
An autodidact in software development, experience has taught me the do's and don'ts of the trade. I love finding simple, elegant solutions and weeding out complexity. I'm at my best in an architectural role, working on concepts that solve actual problems, not just the hypothetical ones (the "architecture astronaut", for the readers of Joel on Software) and I'm constantly on the lookout for ways to improve the way my colleagues and I develop software; increasing productivity, quality and programmer happiness by adopting better tools and technologies and by fighting hard to reduce our technical debt. This is by no means to say I don't like to get my hands dirty and code away on cool new features or debugging some mysterious bug.

As lead developer, my domain is the research and development of technology and architecture that drives our software development effort forward. In my role as senior developer, I've been part of various scrum teams. My main focus has always been large, structural improvement by reducing technical debt and increasing overall software quality. I've been responsible for developing a new PHP framework more suited to our needs as well as providing guidance in its adoption by our developers. Using this new framework we've completely rewritten our corporate web site as well as our internal database synchronization software, in both cases greatly improving performance and reliability. I've also been involved in the design and development of our new hosting infrastructure and I'm currently researching a major overhaul of our product catalog management software.
