Well, my professional experience began as an actress in my parents' backyard.
Since I really couldn't support myself from that, I decided to give radio a try...I interned at WXTC in Charleston SC and scheduled ads and wrote some copy. I think I actually have the cassette tape laying around still with some of those ads on it.
I then landed a position in corporate America, waitressing for Outback Steakhouse in Houston TX. Thank goodness I wasn't a vegan then, or I'd have to think of myself as a sell-out. I gained unsurmountable customer service and Caesar salad making experience that I wouldn't trade in for the world.
While being solicited by the top modeling school to enroll in their classes, I instead opted for a career in graphic design in sunny AZ and got myself a $5/hr job. Not wanting to completely exit corporate America, I continued with the Outback, but got a transfer to their Tempe location. Holy ribeyes!
Bored with writing up job tickets and sloppin' steaks and salads, I hired a co-worker to teach me graphic design. In six weeks I had a new client that hired me to layout their newspaper and all the ads within it. Time to learn what a clipping path is!
Having grown expedentially in my design skills, I decided unemployment was the way to go. I took the summer off, continued with the newspaper, and had a TON of fun! Then after the novelty wore off, I got a part time job at the New Times. I was always the first one to leave each day...which was easy to do, because everybody else wanted the extra money. I tried not to wear sandals too often because we worked with X-acto knives a lot.
Five and a half years later, I finally go the boot. (Thanks Diana Frashier, you knew someday I'd be thanking you for firing me!) So with 8 weeks of paid time off, I started my own business.
