Vaughn Bullard’s Summary

I'm a sort of Jack-of-all-trades. I've been in basically every type of development and IT management position over the past 18+ years. I've actually been programming professionally and non-professionally since the early 80s. I've had exposure to basically all modern and "ancient" development methodologies, languages and operating systems. In addition, I write and edit technical books and articles in English, German and Italian.

I'm also a Mac OS fanatic, "eco-Freak", Standards editor, Open Source supporter and contributor. I'm an "idea man" and a quick study on most things technical. I've got an entrepreneurial spirit as well-I was the kid with the lemonade stand, lawn care business and ran two successful businesses as an adult.

I grew up in Europe, but graduated high school in Chicago. This was because I was a military brat, raised by an US Army Officer father and DoD civilian accountant mother, in Germany. I come from a long lineage of military men. I still have relatives in Germany that I visit often. As a result, I have learned many languages and experienced many cultures. I have traveled extensively across the world (My passport is actually full!).

My somewhat offbeat and atypical background affords me an ability to approach problem solving unconventionally. I have never been a "Yes Man" and always give my clients an honest opinion, whether it is the popular opinion or not. Although quite introverted and shy in my personal life, I am outgoing professionally with no problems speaking to small groups or in front of hundreds of people.

In my spare time (with what little I have :) ), I enjoy playing the guitar, piano, shooting firearms, landscape architecture, watching movies and cooking fanciful dishes. I enjoy posting articles about technology on my blog as well. I have a strong commitment to fitness and nutrition, running an average of 35 miles per week.

    Lockheed Martin

    (Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; LMT; Defense & Space industry)

    19971998 (1 year )

    As the Lead Software Developer, I piloted and developed the FLUENT translation application using Java Servlet (now J2EE) technology for a government customer, using Java Database Connectivity (JDBC). This system allows a user to type in an English query term and returns “notions” of that word in several different languages. This allows the user to include these notions into a large grouped search query against foreign language search engines on the Internet. These languages were sometimes returned in many different languages. When they were returned in a language other than the user’s native one, that hit was then translated into the user’s native language, or language of choice. The user interface developed for this system enabled a high level of transactions processing behind the scenes without inconvenience to users.

    In addition, I played multiple roles in support of the government customer's organization:

    * Web Developer
    * User Interface Designer

  • Software Engineer

    Mystech

    (Computer Software industry)

    19951997 (2 years )

    I along with another colleague developed the EUROWEB, also known as the Informational Knowledgebase for Europe, for a government customer in support of the Summit of the 8 (G7+1), using Perl 5.004, Java, SunOS, HTML, and Sybase11 technologies. The Summit of the 8 brings the heads of state of the world’s largest economies together to set global economic policy. EUROWEB allowed analysts in the field to get up-to-the-minute information using Web-based technologies. It is a high-end document management system that allowed analysts to input analytical information into the system. The analysts in the field would then be notified immediately of the new information via e-mail. This extremely secure system performed flawlessly over wireless encrypted modems and was 100 percent operational during the live run during the Summit of the 8, even when traditional means of communications failed. In fact, for two days the only way to get finished analytical information was through this system.

  • Software Engineer

    Analytical Services, Inc.

    (Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Information Technology and Services industry)

    19951996 (1 year )

    I developed and maintained the Joint Strike Fighter Program Office’s Home Page for Analytic Service’s computer services support contract. The JSF Vision is to be the model acquisition program for joint service and international cooperation and to develop and produce an affordable next generation Strike Fighter Weapon System and sustain it worldwide. It is the largest acquisition program ever in the history of the Department of Defense. As this was one of only a handful of public (at the time) web sites developed for the Department of Defense, it was extremely high profile, requiring 100% 24/7 performance.

  • President

    Digital Direct Wholesalers

    (Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer Hardware industry)

    19941995 (1 year )
