Director of Photography
National Geographic Society
(Non-Profit; 1001-5000 employees; Publishing industry)
March 1987 — December 1997 (10 years 10 months)
Directed operation of the Photographic Division that produced all still photography for the Society, with the primary focus on National Geographic Magazine. Set and managed an annual budget of approximately $6.5 M. Selected photographers to execute photo assignments, negotiating all necessary contracts and arranging for appropriate logistical support. In addition, developed story ideas with photographers and served on the Editor’s advisory board for content creation. Reviewed policy and contract issues annually, making recommendations to the Executive Management Committee on necessary changes.
Under my direction, National Geographic Magazine was nominated eight times as a finalist in the ASME National Magazine Awards for excellence in photography, winning five times. (Served as Assistant Director of Photography from 9/85 to 3/87.) -
Deputy Photo Director
Philadelphia Inquirer
(Public Company; 501-1000 employees; Publishing industry)
July 1981 — August 1985 (4 years 2 months)
Was deputy graphics director, but the title was a bit of a misnomer in that I did a variety of photo editing jobs in my tenure there. They ranged from assignment editor, to features photo editor, to special projects photo editor and at the end of my tenure I was the deputy photo director for the newspaper.
