ISA Certified Arborist, specializing in tree care. Located currently in Atlanta, GA.
I entered the canopy here in 1999. My previous arbor work was in North Carolina as early as 1991, working on the ground as a crew member during a summer job. I climbed shortly after, doing a take down for a freind. It was a Sycamore, and I believe the name stands for "sick more" because the allergens released from the bark and foliage during the take down had me buckled over in the tree at times, coughing uncontrollably.
My climbing experiences during college with a group called "Venture" helped me understand the basics of climbing technique and safety. There is a high ropes course at UNCC which is a great confidence builder to begin climbing through trees.
After bailing out of a couple semesters of Biology course work to chase hurricanes, Dr. Larry Melichamp at UNCC's botanical garden hired me to prune trees in the botanical gardens after classes. I pruned out trees over the rhododendron society's collection, and throughout the gardens
This led me into more tree preservation, and has directed my current career as a certified arborist. I always try to remain true to my passion, and operate a business at the same time. That's a real challenge in today's world.
I have been called upon to rescue cats from trees, and am amused at how they can find there way into canopies and then become totally bewildered at what they have done. I have also been called to rescue a Parrot from a tree, and considered how amused the bird would be as it watched me struggle to catch it (I passed the job onto another climber I know due to schedule conflicts)
